confessions of an accent ho, part deux

Sep 08, 2007 22:53

So watched the Torchwood premiere tonight...can anyone tell me if some/most of the actors are Welsh? 'Cause it took me a while to cut thru the accent. I've had almost no exposure to the Welsh accent so I wouldn't recognize it, but I don't normally have that hard a time with shows on BBCAmerica ( Read more... )

'Torchwood' is terrible, which is what makes it so great. *g*

The actress who plays the Mary Sue Gwen is Welsh. She has a pretty strong Taffy accent. I haven't watched enough of the show to remember if anyone else is, though. D=

And I worked out not so long ago that 'Torchwood' is an anagram for 'Doctor Who'. Which I thought was pretty cool.

When they were working on the first series of the new show, they wanted to create a "code name" for the tapes when they were being transported from Cardiff to London, because thieves were desperate to steal them. Someone on staff came up with the anagram "Torchwood" and the show's creator liked it so much, he used it within the show as inspiration for the spinoff.

Ooh, I didn't know that. Not a fan of DW or TW at all, but trivia like that always interests me.

Eve Myles (Gwen) and Gareth David-Lloyd (Ianto) are Welsh. I usually don't have any problems with accents, so the only time watching British shows really throws me is when they use slang terms or refer to people/events I don't recognize. That and if someone's talking really fast, but I have that problem with any show ( ... )

The weird thing is I don't normally have a problem with the accents either. I think I've watched enough Brit tv/movies that I'm fine unless it's a strong regional accent. (and 3 years later I still haven't figure out what the Scottish man in the Edinburgh Burger King said to me LOL)

I pretty much hated Owen right off the bat. The rest...in fairness it's hard to say about most of the characters after one ep. I didn't hate any of the rest so maybe they'll grow on me.

Er...the Doctor's not exactly British either, is he? ;-P I mean he's alien. But yeah, I was howling at the show. Damn near ruptured something when DT called that guy back and told him he'd missed his chance with Dr. Who. That and inviting Graham into his box.

I think you'll find Owen might grow on you :-) I didn't like him at first, but as you get more and more of his character he does get better - to the extent that I was really rooting for him towards the end of the series.

Since I most likely will keep watching, Owen will get his chance to prove himself. And as long as he doesn't get on my nerves any worse than he did in the first ep, I'll be able to tolerate him.

While I watch DW and TW I'm not a 'fan' as such, but one work friend is and when I asked him re DT's Scottish accent apparently DT rarely uses his natural accent in what he acts, not a 'you can't work if you don't lose the accent' as just a choice? I think, anyway.

Other people have answered the Welsh thing, and all I can say is be grateful they set it in Cardiff not Swansea because Swansea has the second most impenitrable accent next to Glasgow!

Oh dear :-0 I am grateful for Cardiff then. After 10 or 15 minutes I did manage to get the hang of the accent...mostly. Anything worse and I would've had to resort to closed captioning.

I watched all the TW episodes over the span of a day and a half with a friend...only paused to sleep. Not sure if that is the reason why I loved them so much

I suspect it's going to be a 'love to hate' (or hate to love) thing for me, kind of like Dr. Who. If nothing else, it's something new to watch while I wait for House, Supernatural and Dexter to crank up their new seasons.

You should hear John Barrowman's. Utterly delicious! There are clips on Youtube. Go check, love, worship. And his singing voice is pretty damn delectible too.

BTW...

The first Torchwood watchthough is kind of painful. (The only reason I stuck around was because Captain Jack was soooooo damn yummy.) But on repeated viewings it gets much better. Just accept the Gwen hate and focus on the Jack/Ianto tastyness and it's all good.

JB sings? Does he sing with a Scottish accent?

And I can understand focusing on Ianto. Even tho he didn't figure prominently in the first ep, I did find him a bit tasty :-)

Sadly, I've only found one song that he did with his Scottish accent. Woe is us. But he does sing. A lot. He's apparently a pretty big figure in West End musicals. He's put out a couple of CDs and he had singing parts in The Producers (the movie version) and De-Lovely.

And Ianto just keeps getting yummier. Except for the episode where he's a whiney little bitch. And oh how I want to spoil you here but I'm going to be good and not mention the slashyness.
