Instant Messanger

Nov 18, 2009 12:34

I need to start using an IM application to stay in touch with the team I am on.
It needs to work with Google's IM.

I've not really looked into any of this yet...just wondering if anyone might have a suggestion/opinion.

Thanks!

I assume you're on windows, that being said the windows folks at my work use Pidgin. It's free and multiplatform. Does this mean we'll see on chat during the day?

"assume you're on window"...

Yeah me and virtually everyone else...sheessh (just kidding)

Have you had any experience or trouble with using multiple messaging services simultaneously?

(As it turns out...our developers are using a different (microsoft) IM, and it would be nice to be connected (live) to both)

Thanks for the response!

What program they're using is irrelevant to the protocol that's being used. If they're using a Microsoft im it's using the msn one and pidgin should handle it. I've not used pidgin, but a program called Adium that uses the same guts that pidgin does and it works great.

There's also Trillian Astra.

Is this what you use?
I used Trillian back in the day...and liked it.

If you use it, are you using the free version? Have you had any problems running simultaneous connections to various messaging services?

Thanks for the feedback!

I use the free version and I beta tested the full version of the most recent release. THere was no significant difference in usage for me. I wish they had better twitter handling, graphically.

If it can be a website, not just an application, I've had great experiences with meebo.com. I don't even have an IM client installed on my computer anymore.

That's interesting!
I wouldn't have thought of something like that.

(All the game related items on the site worry me a little, and I'm not sure I want a browser up all the time...I'll have to think about it.)

Thanks!

You can minimize the ad on the bottom if need be, and also customize the background to look less like you're dicking off at work. :)

I use trillian. It works with all the IMs including myspace and facebook.
