If you aren't passionate about what you write about, then it's really hard to ever rise to the top. Take me for example (ego...GO!): compare the entries where I'm talking about something I'm not well-versed in, like politics or women; and compare it to my entries about sports. You'll notice a stark contrast in quality.
In regards to professionalism or whatnot, I'd open up a completely different blog from your livejournal. Places like Blogspot and Wordpress seem to carry a higher degree of professionalism than Livejournal (which is more like it's namesake, a personal journal in the public eye).
Conclusion:
- Get a separate blog on a more reputable website.
- Write about something your passionate about.
- Dominate.

You always could just keep opinion pieces on a separate blog, but if you do and don't also post them here, I would like to see the separate blog, too. :)
