Is starting a Facebook group a new avenue for social activism, or is it just the path of least resistance to voicing one's displeasure? Over the last several weeks during the strike at York University for example, I have read, seen or heard numerous mentions of the creation of Facebook groups by students and parents as a means to vent negative ( Read more... )

I'm going to have to argue that Facebook IS a social tool. Social Networking is a very viable and modern way to communicate messages/ideals etc. If it easily attracts many people to a common thread, great. Granted, most people use it to waste time at work, but it is definitely a social thing.

That being said, I do agree with the rest of your argument, and wonder if it's not something inherent in the age of the internet? People have become more apathetic than ever before. If one can't do something from their chair they generally don't want to do anything.

What can we do about it? I'm making sure I do things like OFFICIALLY become a volunteering member of the NDP, I'm in the process of signing up to become a Big Sister, and generally trying to get off my ass and into the streets.

I may only be one person, but I plan on making waves this year.

That's good -- that's what I'm talking about. Maybe part of the phenomenon I am noticing has to do with the apathy of youth or something... as we get older, we become more connected to the people around us. Maybe it's both...

i think it IS both. i keep forgetting that i'll be 30 this year. le sigh.
