Look, you guys, I could say a billion words about Go On, BUT I HAVE BEEN SAYING LOTS OF WORDS ABOUT GO ON, AND I WILL PROBABLY SAY MORE AFTER TONIGHT'S EPISODE, so you can basically read what I have to say about Go On WHENEVER. So here, again, are
the gifs of John Cho trying on clothes while high:
And I'll just remind you that
one time Michael Vartan was on PLAYING HIMSELF, and
Lauren Graham was in an episode as the potential second love of Matthew Perry's life, and it has
Anne, the ACTUAL BEST CHARACTER in any sitcom right now and possibly in anything fictional ever, and
one time these losers all went straight up Brady Bunch, and also it's a constant source of
TRUTH.
OH, AND IT'S ABOUT A
FOUND FAMILY, NOT THAT ANYONE'S INTO THAT. THEY'VE ALREADY HAD THANKSGIVING AND A NON-DENOMINATIONAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION TOGETHER!
Here is how crazy great everyone on this show is: MATTHEW PERRY IS MAYBE ONE OF MY LEAST FAVORITE PEOPLE ON IT. I LOVE MATTHEW PERRY, I LOVE HIM ON THIS, BUT THERE'S JUST SO MUCH GREATNESS!
The highlights for me, personally, are:
ANNE: Anne is a foulmouthed prosecutor and THE LOVE OF MY LIFE. She's in the group because her wife died of a heart condition that might not have been fatal if she's been better about taking her medication. Nobody on this show is going to make you laugh more, and nobody is going to hurt you more. Guys, I guarantee you, if this show sticks around for enough seasons, either Julie White is winning an Emmy for this role, or Julie White is joining Steve Carell and Amy Poehler on the "THESE PEOPLE NOT HAVING EMMYS COMPLETELY INVALIDATES THE ENTIRE EXISTENCE OF AWARDS" list.
ALSO JULIE WHITE PUT THIS SET PHOTO ON INSTAGRAM A FEW WEEKS AGO? WHAT IS HAPPENING, JULIE WHITE, TELL ME MORE.
OWEN: Owen's a teenage boy whose older brother is in a coma after a skiing accident. Prior to the series starting, Owen wasn't known for opening up or really engaging with the others, but since Ryan [MATTHEW PERRY, whose wife died in a car accident while texting him to ask if he could pick up a bag of coffee] joined the group, Owen has opened up more and he is FAR AND AWAY one of the best members of the group. DEAD AND DYING FOREVER over his relationship with his mom and when he and Ryan try to have serious friendship moments but then realize that they kind of fail at that and decide to stick to helping each other out in their own bro way.
LAUREN: Lauren is the group leader, and you probably at some point saw that promo where Ryan finds out that her only counseling experience was with Weight Watchers. I was sort of worried in the beginning that they'd make her into a joke, but NOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LAUREN IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It does come up pretty frequently how inexperienced she is, but it's always made very clear that she's genuinely helping everyone in the group make progress and that they all care about her and respect her deeply. This is why it's GREAT that she's kind of a mess with her own life - she tried a bunch of times to get her real estate license but failed repeatedly because of her test anxiety [THE RESOLUTION TO THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED].
We know from the time that they collected dirt on her that she has an unfinished Tweety tattoo on her butt and is deathly afraid of stuffed animals. She's in a relationship with a great guy who loves her but she's not always sure that he's the one - this in particular has added a fantastic layer to her relationship with Ryan, because yeah, he's one of the messes that she's counseling and he does things like barge into her yoga class to ask for advice and clumsily make a pass at her when he's trying to start dating again and whatnot, but when she talks to him about her relationship, he becomes sort of a mentor figure to her? Like give me middle-aged widower Matthew Perry wistfully talking about his dead wife and saying "when you know, you know" ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. ALWAYS AND FOREVER.
WHAT I'M SAYING is that I love how well they've managed to establish Lauren as someone who is, in a lot of respects, just as lost and fumbling as a lot of the people in the group but who is ALSO uniquely talented at helping them all figure themselves out.
And also I'd like to live with her and stand in the kitchen eating ice cream out of the carton with her while we talk about how our days went. This show cracks me up with its awesome characters and their delightful weirdness, and then it devastates me with their grief, and then it puts me back together and makes my heart grow three sizes with their strength and their friendship and their sincere desire to be there for each other.
