FAMILY BREAKFAST: both a perfect bandom joke and a scenario that sends me into an emotional tailspin

0. STILL NOT THINKING ABOUT IT!!!!! But also, obviously, thinking about it ALL THE TIME? Uhhhh turns out that when you're obsessed with something for a year and a half to a really intense degree IT'S KIND OF IMPOSSIBLE TO JUST BE LIKE "HEY, BRAIN, WE NEED TO NOT DO THAT FOR A WHILE." I'M NOT READY! torigates and I have perfected the art of talking AROUND ( Read more... )

I am glad somebody else on my f-list is watching Girls! I have such a love-hate relationship with it. The characters are in my age range, so it's interesting to see the social commentary and realize huh, this is what society expects 20-somethings to behave like. Hannah's financial struggles seem pretty realistic to me, though? I've seen tons of friends just mooch off other more "responsible" friends while they're trying to get their lives together. It seems to happen especially frequently with boyfriends...

I don't think it was unrealistic that Hannah mooched off Marnie, or even that Marnie allowed it - that's believable given their friendship, and the exchange where Hannah asks Marnie to be more supportive of her writing and Marnie points out that she literally supports Hannah landed in EXACTLY the way it was intended.

But then they get into a fight and MARNIE is the one who moves out and crashes with Shoshanna? Marnie's reassuring Hannah that the apartment's paid up through the end of the month, so Hannah has time to find a new roommate, assuming she can find someone who's willing to pay for more than their fair share of everything?

Financial struggles don't factor into Hannah's life at all unless that week's episode calls for it, and then things like Hannah and Marnie falling out don't feel earned. Hannah quits her job, Marnie keeps telling her to tell her parents and ask for rent money, Hannah doesn't, and...then there are two entire episodes where that decision isn't touched on at all, where if you were just tuning in, you'd have ( ... )

Ah, I see what you mean. I definitely thought it was weird that Marnie was the one who moved out as well, but figured she maybe wanted a change of pace or something (and so things just happened to conveniently fall into place for Hannah). Clunky writing, but there's just so much of that in general, really...

Now that I really think about it, you're right - I have no idea how Hannah is really supporting herself either, other than maybe mooching off *other* friends (didn't she mooch off Elijah as well?). That's possibly because I've been paying a lot more attention to the relationships than the actual plot, which is spotty in just so many places and definitely one of the show's biggest weaknesses. My headcanon is that she does a lot of scrimping and saving and dumpster diving (her outfits would suggest that), but I don't know if that would fully explain things either given the cost of rent in NYC.

S6 of Weeds is AMAZING and the last thing I watched that made me want PAGES of pretentious overwrought meta about it. WHICH ONLY SHOWS HOW MUCH OF A FUCKING WEIRDO I AM BUT THAT IS NOT NEWS. I actually have not seen most of s8 which I keep meaning to fix but honestly I got all I needed out of Weeds with s6!!!!! THAT .GIF OF HUNTER PARRISH IS A STRONG ARGUMENT THAT THIS IS SIMPLY NOT TRUE THOUGH ( ... )

FUN FACT: when I saw on your twitter than Silas was trying to sign his feelings I went "MEGAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and Wikipedia'd the last season episode summaries so I could see which ep that was and then watched that scene and only that scene on Netflix, IT WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!! ("How'd you geg such saggy tits?" "Awww, I miss Megan." was maybe the best thing that happened to me since S2? I STOPPED WATCHING AFTER, LIKE, S4, BUT WHAT WHATEVER, I'M NOW!!!!!!)

I really love hate-watching Girls, which isn't proving anything to ANYONE least of all the people who make Girls, but I LOVE HATING IT!!!!!!!!!!!! EVEN IF I AM A BASIC BITCH FOR DOING SO!!!!!!!! Even setting aside everything that you talked about which I totally agree with!!!!, I'm really grossed out by their handling of mental illness - like, Adam who is clearly unstable and borderline dangerous is presented as this romantic antihero, even as he proves himself again and again to be a scary, manipulative asshole. AND DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HANNAH OUT-OF-NOWHERE OCD ( ... )

I HEARTILY APPROVE OF YOUR APPROACH TO SILAS SIGNING HIS FEELINGS, BUT ALSO, IT HURTS ME INSIDE THAT YOU HAVEN'T SEEN S6? SEASON SIX LIVES FOREVER INSIDE MY HEART. I THINK I'M WATCHING IT AGAIN ONCE I CATCH UP ON GAME OF THRONES, which should happen, like...tomorrow.

I CAN TOTALLY SEE THE APPEAL OF HATEWATCHING GIRLS. Ugh, this: the rationale is basically Lena Dunham going "I have OCD so Hannah has OCD because Hannah is me" WHICH IS JUST FUCKING LAZY STORYTELLING AND DRIVES ME NUTS!!!!!!!!! The unclear separation between Lena and Hannah drives me UP THE FUCKING WALL, like YOU'RE NOT OLD ENOUGH OR SELF-AWARE ENOUGH TO BE PLAYING THE LEAD IN YOUR OWN STORY, LENA DUNHAM, because it's fucking weird and disorienting when the show isn't even aware of all the ways in which Hannah is a nightmare human.

ARYA AND GENDRY THOUGH, PERFECT 2 ME

I am super jazzed to hear of your smart and sensible Arya/Gendry feelings! KEEP WATCHING, THEY WILL ONLY GET BETTER. And then we can talk fic. No more Teen Wolf bullshit for you, young lady!

Hahahaha IF ONLY. The odds of me being free of Teen Wolf bullshit any time soon are SLIM TO NONE. I was actually doing super well for a week or two where I went cold turkey and then GREG WEISMAN HAD TO GO AND KILL OFF ONE OF THE LOVES OF MY LIFE and I realized I couldn't actively avoid thinking about Young Justice AND actively avoid Teen Wolf fic unless I wanted to fill all those extra hours in the day with HIKING or some shit, so, here we are. I am reading minimal garbage these days, though.
