I feel and understand this rage on many different levels. The resentment for Raleigh in the name of Mako is THE DUMBEST because he's LITERALLY Mako's other half and yeah, THE ENTIRE MOVIE IS ABOUT THAT. But Teen Wolf has taught me that no one actually even bothers to pay attention to actual narratives of the stuff they like but rather they just make up the same tired like 4 tropes/story lines over and over again and delude themselves into thinking it's actually canon.

But hey in a movie with the likes of Idris and Hunnam the internet is getting hot and bothered for fucking Burn Gorman so really WHAT DO WE EXPECT FROM THESE PEOPLE.

IDRIS ELBA, FOREVER DOOMED TO APPEAR IN MOVIES WITH UGGOS FANDOM INEXPLICABLY PREFERS TO HIM. [TBH this is probably a blessing for him on a personal level, though.]

The resentment for Raleigh in the name of Mako is THE DUMBEST because he's LITERALLY Mako's other halfYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The movie strikes this insanely perfect balance where they obviously need and complete each other without that undermining how incredible they are as individuals. HOW CAN YOU NOT BE INTO THAT? LOOK AT IT. LOOK. AT. IT. Plus on top of that, nobody loves and respects Mako more than Raleigh, he is 100% hearts in his eyes and total awe over her ALL OF THE TIME but yeah sure what a waste of a protagonist

I don't entirely agree with this assessment. I dig gingerhaze and I get where she's coming from, which is the same place a lot of people are coming from, which is the place where they've bought and read the prequel comics, art book, and other various Pacific Rim-related things that contain a significant amount of backstory that didn't make it into the movie, some of it regarding the Russians and the triplets. However, I don't entirely agree with gingerhaze's assessment that they're more compelling than Raleigh, either, because I think people might be confusing "interesting characters with untapped potential" with "compelling characters". They're not compelling as they're presented in canon; they're compelling as characters we want to know more about, which is like catnip to fandom. You give us a pinch of backstory, and we'll roll in it like crazed cats and ignore everything else

This is pretty much what I was going for, and the major intellectual issue I had with her post [vs my obvious gut reaction "DON'T BE MEAN TO RALEIGH" issue with it]. I love the things fandom does to elevate minor characters and the culture of making something out of next to nothing. (In particular, I can't believe there isn't any Caitlin Lightcap fic yet. GIVE IT TO ME.)
