I'm sorry to hear that! There was definitely some potential there. I'm surprised she's not taking your advice. It's not like these comments are nitpicky, this is basic sanitation.
Cate was actually worried that my rep as an espresso slinger might be damaged by my association with that place.
She seemed more concerned that I didn't upset her son than the fact he contaminated a whole chest of ice... I guess that's being a good mom these days but it sucks to be an employee of such a person.
It sucks to be a customer of such a person too! Ew.
I really wish that there were a way that this behaviour could come to light without implicating you. I know from the early stages of the cafe, she does not take kindly to people discussing things about her business online. But, it seems like she also doesn't take kindly to employees giving her valuable feedback about sanitation IRL. I don't know what recourse that leaves us, other than no longer patronizing the establishment.
I would prefer to give her a chance to address these concerns before I write off her business forever. When my friends ask me why we don't want to go there, I will probably just say that we've noticed some unsanitary things which gave us pause.
Idk, the whole thing sucks. She put so much work into it, why throw it all away at the whims of a 4 year old? I think part of being a good parent is teaching your kid healthy boundaries. Kids shouldn't have free reign in a commercial kitchen. It's a bloody play cafe, for god's sake!
And then there's the dog allowed in the extra rooms but who gets out and goes everywhere. She's super friendly, but she's a dog, fer chrissakes.
And the front cafe is rarely swept...
And it's okay to freeze the bread, the meat, and the cheese but we can't slice a few tomatoes at the start of the shift (to help speed up the process) because somehow that isn't "fresh".
And she thinks 12 minute french presses are good and sweeps the grounds from around the grinders and saves them for later use in her home "espresso maker" YUCK!
How sad that your boss didn't listen to good advice. Glad to hear you are no longer dealing with all that crap. Will you be joining me at WCC now, or have you thought about what's next yet? Either way, I hope you land in a better place.
