Jensen passes the kitchen and is only partly startled by Jared’s little whimpers. More troubling is the fact that he’s sitting at the island, hunched over his laptop, elbows on the counter and nearly frowning. Jensen moves closer and finally leans over Jared’s shoulder to see video of a baby panda bear being coddled by two vets in blue gowns. The thing isn’t any bigger than Tessa and just too much to even comprehend at this moment.
Because the little panda bear is an adorable lump of white and black hair with gorgeous dark eyes and surprisingly sharp claws slipping out of its mini paws. Jensen’s normally cold, cranky insides are momentarily stalling and he feels a little … warm?
“Jen, look at that,” Jared murmurs as he leans back in the barstool, shoulders resting against Jensen’s chest as Jensen continues to move closer and watch the last few seconds of adorableness.
Jensen’s smile is so small, but he can tell it’s kind of sweet, and he doesn’t even try to stop it.
Ten seconds later, the video is queued up and Jared sighs, shoulders hunching forward as he watches it all over again. His voice is tiny and whiny, “Oh my God. Milk moustache.”
A tiny chuckle sounds between them and Jensen sobers up when Jared looks up and over his shoulder briefly, grinning like the idiot he is. Jensen takes a few steps away but he hears how Jared’s stool scrapes on the kitchen tile so he looks back. And the guy is leaning further into the back of the chair and starting it all over again. Jensen’s fighting it, so hard, but he moves back again and watches as the vets rub their hands over the barely-there hair. They eventually tuck it into a blue towel and Jensen hears himself make the tiny little whine before he even realizes it was in him.
Jared chuckles softly and resets the video. Again.
And then once more, and it’s then that Jensen realizes he’s rested his hands at Jared’s shoulders and is now leaning over them to watch even closer.
“Jen,” Jared mumbles.
He squeezes at Jared and says with a smile, “We’re not getting a panda.”
“Nah, not that.”
Jensen squeezes again and stands up, looking down on Jared’s head. And then the guy’s tipping his head back, the top pressing into Jensen’s chest and they’re staring at each other. Jensen’s hands move to his neck and he playfully closes them around the throat with a smirk. “I will choke you in your sleep if you even try to bring one home.”
Jared laughs and swings a hand up, smacking Jensen in the face, which makes him flinch away and Jared’s off running. He’s cackling his way out the back door and into the yard, eventually giving a loud “Oomph!” as he crashes to the ground, Jensen across his back.
“You’re a fucking dirtbag!” Jensen calls out as he thrashes over him, arms winding around Jared’s, trying to grab at him as they continue fighting and shoving and rolling around. Jared’s still laughing. And then Jensen’s laughing as he’s up and kneeling on Jared’s back. It’s so ridiculous, these two grown men, wrestling like little kids. Jensen’s beaming, arms up in the air, as he yells, “King of the hill!”
But then Jared flips himself over and Jensen crashes to the ground with a thud and Jared’s grabbing him around the waist, hoisting him off the ground and rolling over so Jensen cracks himself into the grass on the other side.
Moments later, the dogs are running through the yard, all seven of them. Harley and Sadie barking madly, jumping all around them with the puppies chasing behind, circling the rukus.
“Jesus Christ!” Jared laughs loudly, and finally settles himself on his back and rubs at Harley’s head, flapping the boy’s ears back and forth. “We’re fine! We’s just playin’, baby!”
Jensen’s soothing Sadie down, like he always does, rubbing along her neck and she settles on her stomach, head propped up on his chest. He looks over to Jared and sees the guy all white teeth and dimples and he has to smile himself. But then he flinches when a couple of the little doggies start picking at his socked feet. “Hey.”
Jared looks over briefly with interest before going back to Harley and all that attention.
“I know it’s shitty to ask, but we ever gonna find a place for the pups?”
“What? I thought you liked them just fine?”
He winces at the idea that he hates the puppies, because he absolutely doesn’t. It’s just that … well, he really can’t bring himself to say what it is that bugs him about all the animals in the house. So instead, he says, “It’s gonna be like Animal Farm one of these days. They’re gonna take over, and Ginny’s gonna start it all.”
Jared laughs, “She is a pretty fierce bitch.”
And Jensen laughs, just because Jared’s that infectious. The puppies chase a rogue butterfly into another part of the yard and eventually find some pigs ears to keep them busy and Harley walks over like a protective papa to watch. But Sadie stays put on Jensen’s chest. And he’s still stroking over her coat lovingly. Jared turns to his side and reaches across Jensen, stroking her other side. Jensen’s kind of mesmerized for the moment, watching both their hands trail across her body.
Quickly, Jared’s hand scruffs up Sadie’s back and they both see bits of dander ruffle in the air. Jared chuckles and leans closer, rubbing his palm over Jensen’s head. He’s flinching immediately and moves back with a groan. There’s still laughter when Jared settles and goes back to soothing the disrupted Sadie. His palm presses over the top of her head and down her side to calm her, and she settles back down. “Thinkin’ you’re getting jealous of all the animals.”
“Why would I be jealous of a rabbit?”
“It’s a bunny,” Jared says, almost offended.
“It really matter?” Jensen chuckles.
Jared looks over, a bit too sober for Jensen’s liking. “You jealous?”
His eyes go from Jared’s back down to how their hands are moving in time over Sadie and he takes a deep breath. Which seems to interrupt Sadie from her rest because she gets up and trots over to her babies and Harley. Jensen bends his knees up and wipes his hands over the middle of his shirt and he allows himself to think it over. And yeah, he kind of hates having so many animals in the house to take care of and feels like an orphanage and like he and Jared have spent the last few months doing nothing but argue over animals coming or not coming home. He takes another deep breath and looks over to Jared.
He’s still on his side, still watching Jensen, and his head is tipped down low to the ground while his fingers play in the grass and Jensen can’t stop staring at how freakishly long they look as they walk their way through the green blades.
Jensen reaches over, a finger sliding between two of Jared’s then flicking over and between the next two. “You’re fucking huge, dude.”
Jared laughs, and it’s not even uncomfortable and hesitant. Which is surprising to them both.
“You know how obscene you look with all those animals in your hands?” Jensen grabs Jared’s wrist and he holds it between them before his palm flattens at the back of Jared’s hand. “Gargantuan, man.”
Jared’s fingers splay out in the air and then notch themselves between Jensen’s, and Jensen has to smile, seeing how his hand is nearly drawfed by Jared’s, but it seems okay. Like this isn’t weird.
Jared’s hand turns and closes over Jensen’s. “Don’t look so bad here.”
“Nah, it don’t,” Jensen says before he can even think it.
“Just right,” he smirks. Jared shifts over to look down on Jensen and they both have tiny smiles like this was a long time coming.
Jensen thinks back to their trip to the farm and how he wanted Jared to see the horse birth, and how ridiculously cute Jared is with Ginny, and how childishly adorable he was with the piglet so many months ago. And he kind of realizes it really has been a long time coming.
They’re kissing, and Jensen’s not sure how it started, but he knows it’s happening, and he’s opening up to Jared, tongues and mouths and it tastes sweet and warm and he doesn’t want to stop. He even likes how Jared’s broad chest covers his, how Jared’s giant hands wrap just under him. And he has to press his own hands - ones that feel too small on his body when he thinks of Jared’s, but now he feels they’re just right - settle on Jared. One at Jared’s lower back, slinking under his shirt, and the other into his hair.
And they just keep kissing, and Jensen doesn’t know how long it goes on for, but it’s achingly wonderful and he almost doesn’t want it to go anywhere else because he’s falling in love with the feel of Jared’s tongue over his, how wide his mouth opens for him, how soft the hair feels between his fingers, how Jared whimpers against him and nearly moans as their bodies press together.
But then Jared pulls back, chest heaving against him, forehead pressed down. “Maybe we shouldn’t do this out in the yard,” Jared chuckles.
“Yeah, maybe not,” Jensen says in the best flat voice he can manage without sounding any bit embarrassed.
Jared tips closer, giving little pecks here and there, and neither of them are moving away from the moment. But then Jared’s hand comes from beneath Jensen and settles at his hip. “You know else what won’t look too small in my hand?”
“What?”
His eyebrow flicks up and for a second Jensen’s even afraid because when Jared cups him, he flinches at the warmth and tries to hide his smile. Jensen shoves Jared off and crawls over him to get up to his feet and he’s jogging back to the house. He turns and trots backwards. “You comin’?”
Jared rolls and hops up to his feet in seconds, chasing after him and laughing, not even knowing what got into Jensen, but loving it all the same. “Fuck yeah, I’m gonna come,” he smirks.
