There are many things in life which seem perfectly sensible until you think about them. School, for example.

Today's Observer features an example of the kind of "new research" without which newspapers (and radio news bulletins) wouldn't know what to do:Hundreds of thousands of parents are risking hefty fines by taking their children out of school ( Read more... )

I now thank you for the advice you gave me while I was in China and I tend to agree. I tend to think that working within the system to change the structure is more effective than attempting to demolish it from the outside, though...the fundamental question remains: how best to reach out to those who need it most? This is the education of society.

Interesting and I agree. No school ever told me how to prioritize my children's education - parental rights (well, 'excellent' parents like Sandra and me, anyway ;-) must trump state-education rules.

But, apart from our own two sons (who did fine - right through grad-school), we also had three 'foster-sons' and an adopted son. Their original parents wouldn't (didn't) make good decisions about anything, let alone school ones. Nick's fundamental question is rigt on.

Incidentally, Kevin McGeary suggested we LJ-connect (see his and my comments
- http://mcgeary.livejournal.com/23435.html - )

So, hello !

Welcome - and sorry it's taken me so long to say hello! I've just posted something in response to Nick's question - I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I'm 'on the road' too - hence not much posting recently. Vacation time in Eastern Canada, playing 'grandad' to the world's most amazing 2 yr old, attending a 40-year reunion at McGill U. - and wandering the streets of my youth. Fun.

I'll remark more fully when I've absorbed more of your past entries (curious old bugger that I am) ... my previous ones are under "tomcan", an LJ identity that I changed in January.

Will be spending some time with Nick in about 2 weeks. Showing him the wonders of Vancouver.

Fair enough - I don't know how much you'll glean from the fragments of my life recorded on LJ, but if you want some more straightforward (if slightly out of date) context, you could try my website.
