After having spent a good deal of my adult life living in the south, and plenty of the rest of my life visiting the south, I can say without hesitation that any ignorance on the part of "those" people is willful ignorance. The confederate flag we see as a symbol of "southern pride" now is not even the flag of the confederate states of America, it is the confederate battle flag. The resurgence of this as a symbol of pride came about in the 60s! In fact, that is precisely when SC decided to raise it up on their capitol. At the height of the civil rights movement. It's hard for me to not see it as an aggressive symbol of racism. Does that mean I think everyone with a confederate flag coozy is a "horrible racist" no. But if they're not, then they are willfully ignorant, in my opinion.
(I also happen to feel as if it's somewhat treasonous, tbh)
I do agree with you though, that name calling never helps, and educating is the answer.
