Re: Is that the same as a midwife?dumpstadivaNovember 20 2009, 19:22:28 UTC
the doula isn't the same as a midwife. there are birthing doulas and post-natal doulas. while I'd love both, it'll be a stretch to add the cost of a doula, I suspect. they would act like a nurse / coach / helper for the mom/couple once labor begins. more I think about it, the more I think this would really put my mind at ease.
I used a midwife for the first and we were trying to have my son at home. 30 hours of labor later we went with the midwife to the hospital and delivered there. I really love the pre-natal care from the midwife and the support, but have chosen to go the "straight" route with this baby. just think me and my husband are going to need the additional, personal care and lacking any family here, this may be a good option.
I used a doula. And even though I ultimately wasn't able to have a vbac due to a non-cooperative cervix, she made the entire experience SO much better. She was there with me for every step of the way, including post-partum once Liam was finally able to come home from the NICU.
I highly highly highly recommend getting one. Even if Ibs comes around, she will make his life easier. Bill has said time and again that any man is an idiot for not getting his wife a doula.
