discussion on faith

Mar 29, 2015 16:07

So I am trying to find books (not missionizing but just books) on different faiths for the assistants at my office. They need to learn more about the world.

their views would be extremely offensive to Christians, fair warning. )

Travel is a wonderful antidote to prejudice, as is having a diverse set of friends.

That is hard, to them, I'm diversity. They've never met anyone who isn't Muslim, Druze or Jewish. They've never even been to Tel Aviv.

Weirdly enough, the Messiah is supposed to be born in the summer, according to Jewish tradition. The 9th day of the month of Av.

Hugs, miss you!

It looks to me like you are operating on the assumption that if people could only be induced to grasp "the common bonds" of their various faiths, then the differences would disappear. I would submit that there can be common bonds and also significant differences ( ... )

There's clips of them praying over a cut out of former President Bush. That looks very idolatrous in a religion where the most religious don't have pictures of people in service. Their eyes almost popped at that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWvIOPiKFrs

Evangelical Christianity is extremely uncomfortable for many, especially East Coast liberals like me. The Christianity i grew up with was Catholic where it felt like Judaism, with more icons and different holidays. We Italians and Jews got along beautifully, and it was mostly "attend service, get food." Speaking in tongues would have made both communities squirm in their seats.

Ohhh, you were in Israel? I didn't know, you MUST come back and visit!! Perhaps if I visit you, we'll go to a synagogue together!

Ohhh thank you!
