Is there any particular reason why voters don't get the put in the ballot themselves?

I have never seen any official explanation for our ballot box oddity. My only guess is that the original thought might have been that no one will have the possibility to put in two ballots held together. (While the rest of the world probably thinks that you in the name of democracy should be the one putting it in the box so no one can tamper with your vote.) Or maybe it's just a case of "that's how we've always done it" due to some law-maker happening to write it that way.
