Edit: Ack, I'm not sure why my LJ cut name multiplied so much, sorry about that.
Hello all! I previously brought to your attention the Psyche FLELE player, and now I'm here with another adorable addition for your desktop.
Shimejis!
For those of you who don't know, shimejis (named after the shimeji mushroom, due to their ability to reproduce like the mushroom) are cute little desktop programs that walk around your desktop. They can do a number of things, though they have little meaning other than to be a cute thing going around your screen.
Here's a screenshot of the Durarara shimejis I have so far: Psyche, Tsugaru, Hibiya, Delic, and Izaya. My shimejis really like climbing around my screen walls.
Here are the links to the Shimejis I downloaded off of Pixiv. There are a lot more if you search around; not all of them are good quality but they all tend to have different images which allows for variation in the actions they can do (for example, I found a High-School-Shizuo shimeji that could turn into pudding when he duplicates). Please note that these are all WINRAR and must be extracted. You also need the latest JAVA in order for these to work, so go download that if you don't have it. These shimejis should only be compatible with Windows, though there are shimejis that can work with Macs.

I can't seem to find my Izaya shimeji link right now, but all my shimejis were found on Pixiv under the tag しめじ (you will want to add a specific character's name in order to narrow the results), so you'll be able to find it somewhere there.
Download instructions:
1) Go to the link and insert the password, you will go to a page saying you can download (click the download link then), it will take you to another page where you can wait for the download window or click the first link to immediately get it. Extract and save the folder somewhere.
2) Most people say to click the shimeji.exe icon (the screen with the blob face icon), but I believe this is only to make sure that your version of JAVA is up to date.
3) Go to the folder titled "conf" and rename the two files 動作 and 行動.
4) Go back and this time click shimeji.jar (the JAVA paper titled shimeji), this SHOULD activate the shimeji if nothing goes wrong. If this doesn't work, I'd recommend: making sure you have the newest JAVA and that it's properly installed, that your shimeji was properly extracted, or restarting your computer. If nothing works then I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough to help you.
ABOUT IMAGE PACKS:
The latter two links I gave up before of Hibiya and Delic are image packs, meaning that they only contain image files for shimejis. In order to use them, you need to overwrite the images files (found in the img folder) by changing the name so they all match and then replacing the images with the pack ones. This shouldn't need much more explanation but if it's unclear I will elaborate in comments.
Know that overwriting the image files will permanently change the specific shimeji image, so if you want four different shimejis just download a shimeji pack four times and replace the extra packs you downloaded.
EXTRA INFO:
Here's a basic intro into what (these) shimejis do. They are all scripted randomly, so they do whatever they want whenever; they may not always do all the actions in one sitting, or they may repeat the same action endlessly, but this does not mean your shimeji is broken (just have patience lol).
Shimejis (some actions can only be done by certain shimejis) can: sleep, lie down, stand on the top of your window (if you close/minimize the window, they will fall down) sit/sit and look around, sing, climb screen/window walls (all four sides), jump to the screen/window side and start climbing, sneeze, recharge, get angry, duplicate (if they duplicate too much just right-click the taskbar icon and select the third option), walk around, they can actually throw your window away (to fix this just right-click the taskbar icon and select the fourth option), they can follow your mouse movements (right-click taskbar icon, second option), you can add more shimejis (right-click taskbar icon, first option), and you can pick up shimejis (left-click and hold down) and throw them around. When you want to exit the shimeji, just right-click the taskbar icon and select the bottom option, or right-click the shimeji and select ばいばい.
Depending of the design of your shimeji's image files, some actions will be portrayed differently. For example, my Izaya shimeji has an animation of twirling in a chair when he's sitting. Hope you enjoy these shimejis; you can find more on the net, or even make your own (I'm not sure how though)!
