Superman - the morally obscure

Jul 04, 2006 02:41

Superman might be standing for Truth and Justice, but Lois is representing the American way.

Warning: Superman Spoilers inside.

Moral messages:

1 - single mothers (Lois, Martha) are better than wed mothers.
2 - it's ok to lie about a child to his father, even to hide his existance.
3 - it's ok to just let someone think a child is his, when it's not.
4 - it's ok to lie to a child about his father.
5 - killing bad guys has no moral repercussions.
6 - applause is more important than the lives of strangers.
7 - smoking is bad.

[on protecting people]

Superman saves a plane, after both wings fall off. He sets it down on a baseball field, without killing anyone. He then sticks around for the applause while all the big and small pieces of two 747 airplane wings & engines fall on NYC.

[on killing]

Superman kills three people and nothing is said about it.

Supermans' son (by Lois) kills one person and makes a quick apology to his mom for it. No one even talks to him about it.

[Lois initially thought her partner was the dad, and told everyone that. Later, after she discovers the truth...]

Lois decides not to tell Superman he's the dad. He finds out and seems to have no problem with her silence.

Lois decides not to tell her partner he's not the dad, and he just isn't told.

[On recreational addictive chemicals]

Lois started smoking and they treat it like it's her horrible secret addiction instead of an just expensive way to smell bad and degrade health. Honestly, I thought it was a smelly nod to the original character.

[special effects]

They look amazing. They'll freely ignore basic physics to get a better looking shot.

[scifi realism]

If you even just know what a JATO is, be prepared for a painful divergence from reality. It ends with the end of the first action scene.

Supermans father gave him a magic all-knowing computer with a UI which just assumes every user is Kal-El/sysadmin.

Small amounts of kryptonite can kill Superman, but he can have a nice chat surrounded by tons of tons of it, without noticing any problems.

The nose cone of an airplane is strong enough to support the whole plane (sans wings), but a wing can't.

Capes flap in a vaccume.

Sound travels from the surface of the earth to Super Ears through a vaccume.

[continuity]

Don't bother. It's not faithful to any books I've read. It's not faithful to any movies. It's not even internally consistant.

The did include nods to the worst Superman theme (Can You Read My Mind) and the horrible Flying Square version of the Phantom Zone.

They used god-awful ice castle version of the Fortress of Solitude grown from the magic crystal. I miss the original, in a mountain range, just ouside of the city.
