[ It's been so hard for Charles to deal with it. Everything seems to have just fallen apart for him at once. He lost his best friend. He lost his sister, and though the children are around still -- it's not really the same. He's returning to his study after the last moments on Cerebro, searching for Erik, and he's almost given up. But he wants to have hope that at some point he'll be able to find him. He moves towards the chessboard in his chair. ]

[ Erik's presence wasn't unwelcome or unwanted, but it was -- definitely, a surprise. Charles had searched, and searched, and he was inside of his home, and even though he sees Erik there, he can't feel him or sense him. There was disconnect where Charles had usually felt so close to everyone, and so close to Erik. Their different paths hadn't changed his thought that Erik was his closest friend, though. It was so lonely, and Charles - despite his optimism, had wanted to give up. Stop searching.

The others had wanted him to stop. And continuing on like everything was alright was getting harder and harder. He didn't like the helpless feeling he had been overwhelmed with. And his legs, he could learn. ]

Erik.

[ That as all Charles could think to say, without thinking over it. Moving towards the chessboard. The chair he had normally sat in was gone, and he replaced it with his wheelchair. It feels odd just answering, saying yes as if nothing has happened. He didn't know that it would be as difficult seeing him again as it was ( ... )

[ Charles had hoped - wanted Erik to miss him. It was selfish, to try and cling onto something that was gone. That others had called 'traitor'. It was -- difficult. He felt old and tired. Part of Charles even felt sick at the thoughts of what had happened, but he coped. He had to cope. He had people depending on him - needing him now. And he would find more who would join them at his - their home. He let his hand rest on his lap, staring at the board. Nothing had changed. The pieces are in the same spot that they always had been. The expensive scotch still sitting neatly between books on a shelf, two glasses in front of them. They're clean -- no dust, even. Nothing.Charles looks to the pieces on the board, and takes a deep breath. He wants to ask so many questions, but figures they're not a place to start. No, he'll ask, soon enough. He wants to know how things are going. Has he found anyone else, what are they like. He wants to now everything, maybe just latching onto someone Erik knows would put him at ease in the future. [ Charles was never aggressive in playing chess. He had wondered several times in the time apart if he had been too passive with everything. He had to remain confident in what he had sacrificed wasn't for nothing. He couldn't let a rough spot change what he had devoted himself to. He didn't want the same things as Erik, and he never really did. He didn't move any of the pieces, just watched them for several moments. He watched Erik, he could see the way he looked down. He could hear it in his voice. It was nothing like what they had been. The similar moves starting off in a game of chess, the same seats, the same room. ]

It is, permanent.

[ He finally moves, watching the pieces. ]

I forgive you, Erik.

[ He always would, too. He felt like, in some way -- he had to ease Erik's mind. Though he doubted that saying that would really help him much. He wanted to try. There was just so much tension in the air, and Charles wanted just one more time where they were just friends and they felt like equals. ]

[ Charles watched Erik, took note of the small things that he had barely noticed in the past with the help of his ability. He didn't need it, now. He inhaled sharply when Erik spoke. He wasn't someone who could imagine himself allowing that to happen. He wouldn't change what he had done. He wouldn't let someone die while he stood by and watched. He closes his eyes, only briefly - in thought. ]

You know me well enough to know I can't do that, Erik.

[ No, Erik, he doesn't need to read your mind. He can tell - he can tell you're guilty. ]

I could never do that.

[ Abandoning someone like himself, letting them believe they are a lone. That wasn't even a thought in his mind. Charles knew what it was like to feel alone. ]

[ Charles inhales, thinking on it. He was better than he had been in those first days off the beach. Those first days in the hospital, and then his first days home again he was barely able to hide it from any of the others. It took so much effort that he wondered if he should. Every day was better than the last, though. He didn't once see what Erik did as betrayal, and part of him knew that if Shaw died, that their separation was inevitable. The part of him was beneath his unyielding hope and optimism that Erik would make the right choice. He wondered so many times if he had driven Erik away from him. ]

I am.

[ He looks at Erik, his expression barely readable. There was some hurt, there was some sadness, and guilt there. The ability to watch Erik like that was so familiar. He normally would have smiled and laughed in moments like this, but he couldn't even get himself to do that anymore. ]

I am tired, but [ He pauses ] ...things get better every day.

[ Charles watches Erik's hand, there was a time where he would have just reached out and placed his hand on Erik's. He would have reassured him that it was fine. That they were the better men, and could overcome what was lying ahead. Now, though, Charles knows that he can't do that anymore. ]

No, I wouldn't like for you to leave.

[ Charles sighs and taps a finger on the table. Finally, after considering the request for several moments, his eyes meet Erik's as he speaks. ]

Can you remove your helmet?

[ It wasn't as though he needed to locate him, or wanted to search his mind for anything. He just needed to feel like it was Erik sitting there across from him. ]

[ Charles just brushes against the surface, not really trying to probe. A barely visible smile rests on his face, and for the first time since Erik was there, he felt at ease. He let's his hand rest on the table, watching him. He wanted to reach out and tell Erik it would be alright, but when he opened his mouth to say it -- he couldn't. ]

Calm your mind, my friend.

[ He moves his hand to allow his fingers to tap gently on the table near the board, eying that helmet. ]

It seems like you have already forgotten the things that I told you. I know that we disagree, but I wouldn't ever want you to find yourself lost in that again.
