PSA- Hot iron is really hot.

Aug 16, 2010 00:55

Had a bit of a scare/close call tonight.

I was getting ready to make dinner, which required a hot skillet and some oil. My stove gets very hot. Very. Hot.

I forgot this and turned the heat up to max so that the skillet would heat up enough for the oil and also steam off the water droplets it still had on it from being washed. I went to the check on something else, didnt take that long, came back, and had a feeling the pan was a bit hotter than I'd like. I figure I'll just turn down the stove and  put in some canola oil.

.

The canola oil immediately boils and then bursts into (sizable) flames.

My thoughts, in order;
  1. "I should not throw water on this!"
  2. "It would be horrible if water got on this!"
  3. "I think the microwave will catch on fire if I do not get that pan somewhere safe. BUT WHERE?!"
  4. "SHIT! OUTSIDE NAOW!"
And so it was, that I grabbed with my right hand, a flaming cast iron skillet that was hot enough to bring an oil known for having a high smoke point to near-spontaneous combustion, and carried it calmly as could be expected outside, without tripping over my cat. I set it on the asphalt and then my hand started to really hurt. And then I realized my thumb and first two fingers were a great deal more red than they probably should be.

I should mention that I am an incurable nerd. It was about now that my hindbrain went "Yanno, I would reaaaly appreciate a skilled waterbender about now.." Har....

Saire was at the grocery store at the time and I called him and, in what I thought was a remarkably calm voice given the pain and adrenaline, put in a remarkably calm request for some kind of burn cream and bandages.

hooo. Took me several hours to stop shaking (my body doubles as an adrenaline factory. I should market it to hospitals.),  and I am still clutching various items from my freezer.

Tonight events included;
  • One handed shakey-hands dinner making with bonus round of "the stove is scary" and "dont drop that salad!"
  • One handed Castle Crashers, in which Saire and I beat the Cyclops level with my controling my *magic based* lv.11 character using only my left ringfinger on the controll stick and my left pointer finger on jump and attack with occasional "bash the controller into my thigh and hope it makes the magic charge enough to cast a spell"
  • And then I decided to try being left handed on the internet, and man, to all you natural born southpaws out there, I apologize. Your internet sucks. Its ok, we can still be friends <3

SO YEAH. Icon relevant but not like it should be? XP

Aand since, of course, I had to do this all to my drawing hand...well..tomorrow's gonna be loooong. Loooong. Omg, idk when the last time I went a full 24 hours without drawing while not on a road trip or something like that was. o-o I dunno if I can do it. This might be a lolarious opportunity for non-dominant hand practice tiems XP

dont be dumb like me, psa
