Earth Day is Mirth Day

Well friends, it's Earth Day, and you know what that means? Yeah, me neither. Meanwhile, here are some words about Earth.

First, if we are still here, I intend to return regularly in perfect timing with These Times of Shifting Tides, on the heels of the first decade in the Happily Ever After that was the promise of the 21st Century. Whereupon I intend to feature a series of favorite homesteading lifestyles and family life alternatives aimed at inspiring a better life experience on this spaceship that we have erroneously called a planet.

Highlights include: building, growing food, recycling, repurposing, reusing, husbandry, animal training, companion gardening, rotating crops, pasturing to promote healthy soil longevity, and a variety of other useful tips for when life reopens its doors to us.

Following is a brief list of some of my favorite YouTube channels which feature a variety of Back to Earth lifestyles. I shall attempt to dive a little deeper into each in the days to come.

I begin with, Homesteaders of America, which hosts an annual conference where several featured locations once met to find like-minded others, some of whom have created lifelong friendships that span geographically around the globe. Due to current concerns, this event may relocate to an online format. Otherwise, the Homesteaders of America Conference is scheduled to take place this October 9 & 10, 2020 at Warren County Fairgrounds, 26 Fairgrounds Road in Front Royal, Virginia.

Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company, located in Mansfield, Missouri, hosts an annual National Heirloom Expo, from, September 15-17, 2020, in Santa Rosa, California. However, it is currently on hold until public health restrictions on large gatherings are lifted and physical distancing guidelines are relaxed. You may visit THIS PAGE for updates on the status of the expo. Meanwhile, order your Free Seed Catalog for 2021 here. It comes out this December.

"Plant as though your life depends upon it, for it does", is the motto of Colette O'Neill, the creator and keeper of Bealtaine Cottage Woodland Sanctuary and Gardens, located in the west of Ireland. A three-acre spit of land which she has spent over a decade crafting into the most amazing eco-system from a once dormant chunk of cow pasture.

North Carolina hosts a plurality of various delightful homesteads ranging from inherited to reclaimed abandoned lands, beginning with the delightully edutaining friends and family of former skateboarding celebrity, Justin Rhodes and his talented beautiful wife, Rebekah. Their form of miracle farming is featured almost daily. Or you can enjoy their documentary of The Great American Farm Tour, where they spent a year living in a converted school bus with their four children traveling the entire United States to visit homesteaders from sea to shining sea.

Art and Bri are possibly my favorite channel for all things homestead, with their charming family of seven living on a North Carolina reclaimed abandoned tobacco farm. They are currently grappling with rebuilding their home that was infested with mold spores that made them all quite ill, while still managing to grow all their own meat, milk, and many of their own vegetables.

The Hollar Homestead in North Carolina is the new home to California transplants, Meg and Ben Hollar. They found a nice bit of land were they are rebuilding the original mobile home, while growing their own food, a new baby, and thrive with four sons. Meg has a fine cottage soap business, which they hope to have back up and running to help meet our nation's growing need for such items, and Ben creates amazing hand-crafted knives between wrestling with insulation and laying new flooring.

Sow the Land are also a North Carolina homestead operated by another family of California transplants, Jason & Lorraine Contreras, which they began when Jason's health took a downward turn and he wanted to live a healthier lifestyle.

Next, we travel to the Missouri Ozarks to hangout on eleven acres Off Grid with Doug and Stacy, featuring their pioneer life in the 21st century, with a host of barnyard companions, including, horses, sheep, guinea fowl, chickens, ducks, turkeys, two dogs, and some cats.

In another mysterious part of the Missouri Ozarks, called Ava, we find Living Traditions Homestead, Modern World. Traditional Living, with Kevin and Sarah, who grow plenty for themselves and some to sell at their local Farmers' Market.

For all things fair and fowl, join Whitehouse on the Hill with Jake & Becky in, Easton, Missouri, where you can enjoy the amusing antics of their pet Emus, or admire their gorgeous Peking ducks.

Possibly the most beautiful homestead is in the Pacific Northwest state of Washington, with The Elliott Homestead, where the talented and lovely Shaye Elliott and her family treat 'every meal as a celebration'.

After that, we travel south to Arizona for the fun-filled antics of, Danelle, Kevin, Ethan, and Lydia, who enjoy the adventures of urban farming utilizing an ancient Native-American irrigation aqueduct system to water their land and raise an hilariously enjoyable herd of goats, at Weed 'Em and Reap, Farm Life in the City.

Let's return east to New Hampshire where Al and his family bring us A Guide to Modern Homesteading Self-Sufficiency and Freedom at Lumnah Acres. Al calls his chicken coop New Yolk City governed by an unique rooster named Moose.

In Arkansas, Jess and Miah know everything you will ever want to know about tomatoes, and are learning about raising alpacas, with several other varieties of livestock and pets, at Roots and Refuge.

Finally, we travel out of the country to our polite upstairs neighbors in, Ontaria, Canada, where we bone-up on our Bushcraft skills with Shawn and Emily James of My Self Reliance. Or visit with Shawn at his other Self Reliance Skills for the 21st Century channel.

As stated earlier, I will be spending future time taking a deeper dive into the complexities and subtle nuances that comprise each of these fascinating and informational Vlogs. Who knows? You might learn something you never knew you wanted to know until now, with more everything and a side of relish. Until then, enjoy lovely days, drink plenty of water, wash your hands, cover your face, don't talk with your mouth full, eat healthy, and be well, you delightful Well Beings.
