I feel the same way. I would rather be in the suspense of not knowing than finding out false facts as was the case with these families. It just keeps reminding me of the fact of countless times that media is wanting to put the first bit of information on the news without 100% confirmation. Maybe not as severe like this story but there have been others where you later find out that the news was just wrong from the beginning or just nog accurate.

I cant think of others off hand but one. I remeber the sniper guy in maryland and dc. The news told people to look for a white van. Later they said that the van had nothing to do with it and he was shooting out of s 94 pontiac or seomthing like that.

The media got the information FROM the families though... I agree, they accepted hearsay as fact, and it was not, but it wasn't that the media came up with the notion on their own, or even that they heard a whisper and turned it to a shout.... The bells were ringing and people were screaming praises and joy before the media picked it up.

I'm not saying ANYONE should be defended for whatever happened... it's just so early in this, it's SOO sad, and early to play the blame game...

My mom told me about that mixup this morning after I had gone to bed relieved that they were alive. I was sick to my stomach when I read the headlines in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette "FROM JOY TO GRIEF: ALL 12 MINERS DEAD" and it showed their families celebrating. How sick is that?? I really do not like the media much.

Me too. And it's particularly frustrating to me at school because all these suburban kids think Upshur County is as far away as Mars.

Derek woke me up last night to tell me the miners were alive. I watched until 1 a.m. and couldn't hold my eyes open any longer. Then on my way to work, I turned on CNN Radio in the car and heard "We all know by now that 12 of the miners are dead."

I thought the announcer had misspoken. I think my frustration right now is directed at the company officials. This quote is killing me:
Hatfield said it became clear within 20 minutes that the news was terribly wrong. But he said families were not told of the mistake until three hours later because officials wanted to have all the information right first.

"Let's put this in perspective. Who do I tell not to celebrate? I didn't know if there were 12 or one" alive, the executive said. (from CNN.com)

But this one... I guess from AP... does kind of explain it:
CHARLESTON, WV - The story of a miracle: twelve lives saved. We all know now it was not the ( ... )

Hmm... that last one does make sense... seems probable that

'12 found, 1 alive" could be heard as

"12 found alive"

plus, its human nature to hear what we want.
