I disagree with it not being enjoyable for all people who haven't seen the series, but I guess thats just different perceptions. I've seen about half the series, maybe that made it less vague.
Hmm...I'd never even heard of the series, much less seen it, and I rather liked the movie. But I'm told I have no cinematic taste whatsoever, so my opinion means little.
I think the movie did a pretty good job of holding its own. I haven't seen the series yet, but I think I understood the movie. Maybe it is my lack of experience with tv shows of this nature that let me enjoy it?
When you see the series, let me know if you can translate any of the chinese. I want to know what on earth they're saying!
I can sorta see your point on Inara and Sheppard getting a bit type-casted. But, the dialogue was still top of the line. And Mal's screen pressence I think kept the movie together. As for it being big enough, they revealed a giant government conspiracy that resulted in a whole planet being wiped out and starting a whole new race of men that cause problems for the people along the rim. For Firefly, that's a freaking huge event! Most of the time, they're just smuggling and getting into bar fights. :) So, I really don't see what you mean. Personally, I just loved it. :)
