You have to understand that they're two different beasts. It's the the Who album, its the Broadway musical. For what it is, it's a very powerful recording. Remember, this is coming from a guy who's been a Who fan since my mom played them for me dancing in the living room when I was 8 years old. You can't have exactly what the Who did on their album on a Broadway stage. It still is a rock opera, but they've got to add things to make it appealing for a full-length SHOW. e.g. trumpet, fuller orchestration, harmonies for full ensembles, etc. You've just got to keep in mind that it's a show meant for the stage adapted from The Who album, not the album itself. Trust me, it works. And the script that MTI has is not the Who album's lyrics, its the Broadway show.. so remember that. I hope I didn't offend you.
Well I mean all that is obvious- I was just blown away by how non-impressive it was to me. It probably would be more exciting were I sitting in the theater. It's not really the arrangement so much as the way it gets done on Broadway. I love hearing Broadway versions sung by people at UMass, or people on a smaller stage, when there's some emotion behind it. If I heard a different group of people perform this exact version right now, off-Broadway, I would probably love it.
It's all just an interpretation. Even though Pete and co. were über-involved, of course it's not the Who. The exra harmonies are necessary, the extra instrumentation as well, to an extent. I just cannot stand the way this CD sounds. The way the drums are tuned, the mechanical sound that everything has.
Obviously MTI does not have the album lyrics. There's a completely new song, as well, and it's a good song. I just want to hear it with the cheese at about a 6, not an 11.
I wouldn't have nominated the show if I were dumb enough to think that they were the same thing, because I probably wouldn't have managed to tie my shoes and walk down to the campus center. :P
