It's a nice effect. But why don't you just use a yellow/red gradient map? Wouldn't it be easier and faster?

I was in the mood to make a tutorial and started to mess with effects and this is what I came up with. What you are saying is probably way easier.

A while I go while I was messing around with an icon, I accidentally made the image (a rose) just like yours, except the color was acid-green. I liked it so much, but I wasn't sure others would if I used it on a few of my icons. But it seems that you do! =) It's reassuring.
