So it seems the first two waves of this years JETs are now in Tokyo. A 3rd group is leaving in August. I've yet to get a call saying I'm in or a letter saying I'm out. But if I haven't heard anything by now

Well, if you want to come to Japan, get a job with NOVA. If JET fails, that's the easiest way to do it. And as a side note, if you want to make a career out of it, go to night classes over here to get your masters. Then you can become a college English professor over here. ;)
Well, that's what I got from an American professor that I know. He came over here, and was doing private lessons for quite a while, and some juku, I believe. He said then he made the decision to do it full time, got his masters and went on to become a professor.
I guess it depends on if you want to go to Japan and don't care how you get there, or you specifically want the JET program. If your main thing is to get to Japan, then by all means try the other routes, but if your heart's set on JET only then I'd see if you can get a decent job in Funcie (argh yeah right D: I know, I'm making crazy talk, but they're more likely to hire someone that's not going to vanish into Collegeworld at the end of summer) or consider something like grad school. I'm still working on what I'm gonna do after classes, and plan B should that plan fall through, so that's about as far as I got so far. Hope it helps though.
