I was never really, really into the Transformers toys, but I would have liked to have an Astrotrain. Would you recommend this as a suitable replacement for an original one for such a casual fan? I'm totally guessing that this new one would be slightly cheaper than an original currently?
Well, it probably depends on what condition you're willing to accept. A lot of the 1984-5 toys are fairly cheap in somewhat banged up condition because there were SO MANY sold at the time. And there was a commemorative series reissue a while back as well. A quick ebay check shows several loose but complete Astrotrains with bids currently sitting at $10-12, although no accounting for snipes.
That said, here's the pros and cons. G1 actually looks more or less like a space shuttle and a steam locomotive in the vehicle forms, while Titans Return is a shuttle-ish spaceship and a rolling fortress with train detailing. G1 robot is a tiny-armed brick, TR robot is highly articulated and well-proportioned (heck, the Titan Master little robot figure has better articulation than G1 Astrotrain). G1 probably makes for a better display piece, TR is a better toy.
