Canon: Bleach
Character: Matsumoto Rangiku
Timeline: Chapter 423
Personality:
Rangiku's personality can seemingly best fit into two categories; lazy slacker and socialite drinker. That being said, there are actually many more facets to her personality. Although at first glance Rangiku might seem like a playful individual, there is also a certain strength in her character as well. She is very loyal and protective, especially towards her Captain and although she seemed to be rather self centred about her own being, Rangiku is aware of the emotions of others, and often tries to help them in anyway she can. She offers kind words, or harsh ones if needed, and is there for her friends if they need her. Her relationship with her Captain is built on trust and loyalty rather than having matching personalities. Toushirou is far more serious than his vice-captain, yet together they do tend to work quite well. The main exception to this is of course Rangiku constantly not doing her paperwork and thus having Toushirou chide her for that. There seems to be an air of comfort around the two and in times of need, Rangiku is very professional, especially during battle. Paperwork is another matter completely.

It is a well-known fact that Rangiku loves to drink, especially sake, and often does so, whether she is on duty or not. There has been many a night when instead of doing her work like a good little girl, Rangiku instead has resorted to sipping her booze and forgetting all about the work, and has hopefully dragged some people along to pay the bills. Her looks also help support the party queen image, for at first glance, that is what Rangiku portrays: buxom, bouncy, vivacious. She loves her alcohol and can drink many people under the table with her high tolerance of the substance. So, while her personality might hold some serious flaws such as her procrastination of work and love of booze, her strengths include her loyalty, trust and ability to be there for her friends in times of need. Rangiku can also be a very stubborn person. When her mind has been made up on something, it is hard to get her to budge from it.

She is not modest about her looks, and will often address the fact that her cleavage is as big as it is. She’s tried to use those looks to get things, such as bribing Ichigo to allow her to stay in his room. Rangiku also plays the role of the dumb blonde quite well. She appears quite dense about some things, but often it is just a role that she plays. She is able to get Harribel’s three fraccion to squabble amongst each other instead of fighting her. She knows that her party girl looks often let her get away with things, and in turn people will often underestimate her. Let them, for they will learn that although she might not be a genius like her captain, she isn’t stupid. She has taken what she had been given and will use it to her advantage. Rangiku can, at times, be a very selfish person. She likes things to go her way, and will often whine, complain or badger to get them so, although this does not always work. It often might appear that she does only think about her own being, but this is not the actual truth. Rangiku cares about many people, whether they are shinigami or human, and will often look out for them. Rangiku can also take on the role of mentor to people.

It is most likely because she is willing to tell the truth in most circumstances, even if you don’t really want to hear it. She informed Izuru that she hadn’t even attacked him seriously and she told Orihime some words of advice when she was lamenting over Rukia and Ichigo. She is often like a big sister to many and always offers her shoulder to a friend if they need it. She does make friends easily, but there is only a small circle of very close friends. Even then, many of them don’t know what is going on in her head, but she is willing to lend a shoulder to them.

Rangiku was rescued by Gin as a small child and the two of them were close. She notes that he always left her without a work and without telling her anything. He'd usually come back although he would eventually go to the Academy to become a shinigami. When he betrays Soul Society, Rangiku is devastated and doesn't understand. When she finally comes to his injured body in the Winter War, Rangiku does cry over him. In the aftermath, she states she does hate how he was always just leaving, especially when he left her behind, but that he clearly knew her well enough to guess how she could have reacted had he left something behind for her, and she loved that part of him.

So, although Rangiku can be selfish, lazy and loud-mouthed, she is also trustworthy, loyal, and when need be, hardworking.

Background:
Rangiku's story is one full of many holes. As time passed, it soon became evident that Rangiku simply could not survive anymore and was left alone waiting for death to find her. That was when Gin appeared. He had been carrying a bag of food when he had come across the girl, and for Rangiku, he came a beacon of light in her life. All it had taken was one kind gesture of food to open up a new world for the girl.

Gin seemed to fill some of the gaps and gave Rangiku more hope. On one occasion when they were young, he asked her when her birthday was. Rangiku had no answer, for she herself did not have a clue. She had been alone for as long as she could remember, and had no recollection of these things. In a moment of kindness again, for which Rangiku would always remember Gin in, he gave her a birthday. Gin told her that the day they met would be her birthday, for that was the day that she was no longer alone.

Gin, not wanting to see Rangiku cry anymore, decided to become a shinigami so that he could make that happen. He made up his mind and joined the academy. Some time after, Rangiku followed to become a shinigami as well.

She would have a run in with another white haired individual who would later have a great impact on her life. This was Hitsugaya Toushirou whom Rangiku bumped into one day. Almost flattened by her breasts, Rangiku would later inform Toushirou that it was the fact that he was leaking reiatsu that was making his grandmother sick. She told him that he should become a shinigami and learn to control it. Rangiku would eventually be promoted to lieutenant of the 10th Division, and Toushirou would eventually become its captain.

It was one certain lieutenant's meeting that would bring chaos into her life. At this meeting, it was revealed that the 11th Division had been annihilated. Shock had registered in the faces of those there, and Rangiku had been one of them. Events seemed to have progressed since then rather quickly, leaving Rangiku reeling to keep up. It came as a shock when Momo was sentenced and conspiracies started to run wild. Throughout this period, Rangiku stood by her captain's side, yet doubts had started to form in her mind.

Events soon led Rangiku to make a choice. She chose to continue to stand by her captain. Toushirou moved to confront Gin whom he grew to suspect was responsible for the murder of Aizen. Soon, it became clear that Toushirou was trapped, for he was defending Momo who had attacked him and fighting Gin. Although it tore her heart to do so, Rangiku jumped in, confronting Gin while leaving her captain Momo. Gin though, left without saying a word to anyone or lifting a finger against her.

With her captain, Toushirou and her made one last attempt to appeal to the Chamber of 46 about Rukia's execution. All ready as they approached, they sensed something wrong, and once inside the actual building, they realized that all the members had been murdered. Kira Izuru appeared, and Rangiku was left to pursue and fight him, letting her captain return to the chamber. It was not much of a fight though, and Rangiku took Izuru down.

Confusion continued to grow as things started to fall apart before Rangiku's eyes. Gin turned out to be a part of the cover up and was revealed to be a traitor of Soul Society. Rangiku tried to arrest Gin, but was forced to retreat when the nagacion beam appeared to take the traitors away.

Gin, in his usual arrogance, told her it was a bit disappointing, for he had wanted to be held a little while longer. This event shattered her resolve, and Rangiku entered into a short state of depression where she spent most of the time drunk. Izuru would arrive, bearing an apology, but Rangiku waved it off, and the two of them got drunk together.

Rangiku was “chosen” to be one of the six shinigami that were sent to the human world to help Ichigo with the Arrancar problem. They arrived one day at Ichigo's school, and pretended that they are transfer students.

As it turned out, the six of them had assumed that they would be able to stay with Ichigo, a plan that he squashed. Rangiku attempted to sway his mind by flashing her boobs, which Ichigo said would not work, and covered his eyes, but peaked anyway. In the end, Rangiku and her captain ended up living with Orihime. While Toushirou was less than pleased to be living there, Rangiku settled herself right in. It seemed as if Orihime and Rangiku got along rather well, as Rangiku willingly ate the food that Orihime had made for them, stating even that she liked it. They form a rather strong bond that is akin to siblings or best friends, and she even talked with Orihime and told her that Ichigo did think she was important, a fact that had been on Orihime's mind for awhile.

An assault was lead by Grimmjow upon earth, and the shinigami and the Arrancar face off, one on one. Rangiku's opponent was Nakim, who was a silent yet fat Arrancar. Nakim was able to get the upper hand quickly, and Rangiku was forced upon the ground. Yet as Nakim said his parting words to her, something happened. The limitations that had been put on the shinigami had been taken out, and Rangiku had her limit taken away. She had simply been bidding her time until the limit was removed, and once it was, so was able to destroy Nakim.

Alas, more Arrancar arrived: Luppi and Yammy. Due to Rangiku's appearance, Luppi became very interested in her, and wanted to kill her. Things did not turn out well, as Toushirou was trapped and Ikkaku, Yumichika and herself were also brought down. It was not until Kisuke turned up that things turned around. Due to his arrival, Rangiku was able to distract Luppi while Kisuke worked on Yammy That gave Toushirou time to work his final release. It was a draw in the end, but the Arrancar were a bit more successful, as they were able to trap Orihime.

Instead of being allowed to go after them and bring the girl back, they are recalled back to the shinigami world. Rangiku felt bad about that, since Soul Society was not going to do anything.

Rangiku would be one of the shinigami that went to the fake Karakura Town to await the arrival of Aizen and his group. Rangiku would eventually engage three Arrancar after baiting them to bicker amongst each other. Even though it was three on one, Rangiku held her own for a time, but ultimately Momo arrived to help her. The two of them were no match for the trio's release, a monster by the name of Allon. Rangiku tried to block him, but he moved too fast, taking a chunk of her body out with one swipe. She would lose consciousness.

Through the aide of Izuru, Rangiku wouldn't die of her injuries but she would miss most of the battles. She came around to her senses when Gin was battling Ichigo. Despite her injuries, she still got up and started towards where Gin was fighting. She managed to make it in time to keep Aizen from harming Don Kanonji and Ichigo's friends. She told the others to retreat and that she would take care of Aizen and Gin herself. Initially, Aizen started speaking with her, but Gin interrupted, pulling Rangiku away with him so that they could 'talk'.

Alone, Rangiku finally was able to ask the question she wanted to ask Gin ever since he had left Soul Society: why was he working for Aizen? Gin came in close, threatening Rangiku with his sword. While Gin claimed to Aizen that he killed Rangiku, in truth he didn't and instead used a bakudou that knocked her out. Rangiku came too after Gin had all ready been attacked by Aizen for betraying him and she remained over Gin's body while the final battle raged on.

The shinigami returned to Soul Society. In the aftermath, Momo was being treated due to her injuries, and Rangiku stood silently watching her captain as he trained to become stronger. She realized that everyone was moving on, herself included. She reflected on Gin, remembering that he would always disappear and never leave anything for her to remember him by. That part of him she hated. Yet, Rangiku also knew that he probably figured out that if he did leave her something that she would never be able to move on.

Abilities/Additional Notes:
Rangiku's zanpakutou is Haineko, and although she has shikai, she has yet to achieve bankai. The release phrase is Unare! or Growl!. As for Shikai Abilities, with the release command, Haineko dissolves into a cloud of grey ‘ashes’, although it is not ashes by any means.

By swaying the hilt of her sword, Rangiku can tell Haineko where she wants it to go, though Rangiku does not need to do this in all cases. She is also able to mentally control her blade. Depending on the strength of the attack thrown at Rangiku, it can also work to shield to block the blow or take part of the blow and lessen its force.

Haineko has three main skills that Rangiku uses. The first is as a shield or aegis. Rangiku is able to drawn in the ash of Haineko to form a shield that will repel, disperse or soften any attack sent her way. In this way, it is a defensive weapon. Also, Rangiku is able to use Haineko almost like a cat's claws. The ash is able to strike out and slice the skin. Lastly, Rangiku is able to make Haineko into the form of a tornado. She will draw it in and make it start to swirl before sending it out.

Besides that, Rangiku has the abilities that shinigami possess. She is ranked as a vice captain and has a high amount of spiritual energy. Also, she has flash step, which allows her to travel over a great distance, strength greater than that of an average human, and is able to use kidou, although she is not shown using them too often. Her swords skills are excellent, for although she might often come across as lackadaisical, when need be she can fight with a serious intent.

Ehhh? What exactly is this? Is this some sort of a joke? Taichoouuuu? I’m sorry? I’ll get right to those reports… in a bit?

Ne, but, this isn’t the human world, is it? It doesn’t seem the same as last time… and how did I get here? I know I was drinking sake last night, but it wasn’t that much sake… was it?

Oi, hello? Is there anyone out there? It would be pretty boring if there weren’t anyone else… That would mean I would have to talk to myself. Taichou, this isn’t your doing, is it? It’s not my fault the girls got in the way and knocked the ink over the paper! They have a mind of their own! I swear! Listen to them at night! They plot things!

Sample RP:
God, it was calling her name. Soft blue eyes peered up from beneath the stack of papers piled across her desk. She deserved a break, really she did. Rangiku had been good after all, sitting here this evening filing her reports like she was actually meant to. Never mind that Toushirou had threatened her under oath of death if she did not finish the pile- perhaps a slight exaggeration on Rangiku’s part. She had been too busy listing off reasons why it hadn’t been done.

She had probably deserved it anyway, Rangiku thought. She had been prattling on about her boobs, telling him that she thought the left one appeared to be slightly larger than the right one, and whether he would confirm or deny these results. Needless to say, that had not gone over well.

Five reports done, a lot more to go. Rangiku had been sitting quietly though, doing those first five all in a row. Had any walked by, they would have been shocked by the look of concentration on her face and amused at the tongue sticking out of the corner of her mouth. It was hard doing these things, and it was all she could do to keep from doodling on the boarders. Of course, that had already happened once, and the reaction from Toushirou was enough to keep Rangiku from doing it again; at least anytime soon. Finishing a sixth report rather quickly, for she had sloppily filled it in, her
eyes jerked up once again, landing on the bottle of sake off to the side of her desk. All Toushirou had said was to complete the pile, which Rangiku swore was growing larger by the minute, but he had forgotten to tell her when she had to finish them.

Smiling at his own foolishness and her luck, Rangiku pushed back her chair and slunk forward to reach her trusty bottle. Ah, one of the wonders of the world, or so Rangiku thought, setting the cup flat on the desk and uncapping the bottle. Just one cup, she promised herself, as she watched the liquid pour out of the neck of the bottle. Smacking her lips, Rangiku slowly brought the cup to her lips, savouring the smell and the first welcoming taste. Toushirou really needed to relax a bit, sit down perhaps and drink some sake with her. It worked wonders for others, and perhaps it would give him a bit less firm composure. Oh, she liked Toushirou and enjoyed his company, but sometimes he was such a stick in the mud.

But, she paused. She knew he had been working hard. Rangiku had witnessed him training and knew what drove him. They had all been moving forward since the war, each in their own way. That smile faltered on her face for a moment, wavering, as her mind turned back to Gin. He’d left her nothing but those memories she had of him, but perhaps that was enough. She too, like everyone else, would move forward. Rangiku didn’t know what the future held, but that wasn’t anything new. She wasn’t an oracle and she couldn’t know what tomorrow might hold.

Well, with one exception. More paperwork…
