'Kissing,' says Lolita curiously, like she's tasting the word for the first time. 'What precisely is the point?'

She knows what the point is, of course, but a textbook definition is not the same as understanding. It seems such an important thing to entities of flesh- that, and the associated touching and stroking and so on and so forth that ( Read more... )

The Doctor, oblivious to Lolita's identity, believes she must just be a confused alien, like he was, once!

"It's an expression of affection," he says. "Connecting physically. Generally a human custom."

She's not at all surprised to see that the Doctor is the one answering her question. Indeed, it rather amuses her; he never could turn down a chance to help, if only on the smallest level.

'I'm perfectly aware of that, Doctor, thank you,' she says with crisp good nature. 'It just seems a terribly arbitrary choice, when there are so many other, more truthful methods of expression affection for a person. And it's hardly restricted to humans.'

The Doctor doesn't like it when he's doubled forward on his own timeline so he ends up conversing with someone he has yet to already meet. Still! No reason not to talk!

"True, but if you think about it, very few species out there find the mutual stimulation of mouths and sharing of saliva to be romantic."

Oh, but he has met her! Many times, in fact, he just doesn't quite realise it. Fair deuce, as she's not exactly in the habit of going around wearing a body.

'Many of the humanoid species do,' she says with a shrug. 'And most other species have some physical equivalent.'

Jack sees a beautiful woman. That's all he knows.

"Hello!" He steps forward, giving her that dazzling grin of his. "Kissing is something fun that a lot of people do. It generally shows affection. You don't kiss someone you hate, do you? Well, not often."

Unfortunately for Jack, this particular beautiful woman is not as enamoured with him as he seems to be. Her temporal senses are somewhat secondhand in nature whilst wearing this body, but they're still strong enough for Jack's presence to register as completely and utterly wrong. Her skin very nearly crawls.

She can't quite help the slight quiver of the corner of her mouth, something between fear and revulsion, as she looks at him with a decidedly unimpressed air. 'Yes, thank you, Captain, I'm familiar with the textbook definition.'

Jack's smile falters. Why does everyone look at him like that? Does he smell? He is tempted to take a sniff, but refrains. Instead, he stands there, trying to force his smile.

"Well, you asked. I was just offering my opinion. I could give you a demonstration..." He raised an eyebrow. He was pretty sure he was going to get slapped for that.

Lolita doesn't slap him, but that little tic at the corner of her lips twitches again. And it's not just disgust there, but a look that suggests she feels almost unwell, like Jack's presence makes her nauseous. Give her a moment or two, she'll pull herself together.

'You know,' she enunciates crisply, 'You are the second Time Agent to offer his services on that, and I'd rather take up the first one.'

Which, seeing as the first one was John Hart, is saying a hell of a lot.
