Thorin
Thorin had not dealt with any children in his time at school here. He'd been female, he'd dealt with his roommate turning into a blue dog that wished for him to uncover clues of some sort, but no children for him.
It was really only a matter of time before this happened, let's be real.
But for now he was enjoying a quiet morning of trying to get glitter out of his clothing. He loathed glitter with ever fiber of his being.
Asdis
And fate would have it that this was that day. Asdis had accidentally stepped through a portal after leaving her parents to one of their usual arguments. She had found herself in a park with lots of other children, and had been clever enough to figure out where she was. Obviously she needed to find her parents. Or one of them. It was unlikely that they would be in the same room. Having knocked on a few random doors, she eventually found room 206.
Thorin
Thorin squinted at the door, wondering if perhaps Blue was expecting someone. "Enter."
Asdis
Asdis opened the door. "There you are," she said, closing the door. "I have been looking for you. Is mother here?"
Thorin
"I beg your pardon?" The girl was certainly of Dwarven stock, but tall. Possibly slightly taller than even him. Also, he was in no way at the proper age to think of fathering children. So this was all madness.
Asdis
Asdis rolled her eyes. "Have you been drinking mother's teas again. I've told you not to."
Thorin
Thorin crossed his arms over his chest and tried to look as imperious and unamused as he felt right now. He was of the proud line of Durin and would take no bullshit, damn it.
Asdis
Funny, Asdis was also of the proud line of Durin, with the Sharpe talent for being judgmental, so she could certainly match that. She might even be better. Weren't you proud of that, Thorin?
"What? Stop being like that, or I'll hit you during weapons training."
Thorin
He would totally be proud if he weren't so utterly confused.
"Explain yourself first, child."
Who was probably barely younger than him. But shhh.
Asdis
Asdis sighed and rolled her eyes, but as her father was clearly under some spell of amnesia, she said, very slowly and clearly as if he had trouble understanding things.
"I am Asdis Louisa, daughter of Thorin, Princess Under the Mountain. My mother's name is Lucille Sharpe."
Thorin
"...no." Yes, that was about all he could come up with right now.
Asdis
"No? What do you mean by no?"
Her father was usually proud of her.
Thorin
"I do not have a child," Thorin replied slowly. In case she was dim from the human side of her genetics. "I am barely twenty-two."
HE WASN'T READY TO BE A DADDY WHEN HE WAS STILL CONSIDERED A CHILD.
Asdis
"Clearly I have travelled back in time," Asdis deduced, a talent she must have gotten from her mother. "But it doesn't matter. Mother is here too, isn't she? Isn't this the place where you met?"
Thorin
That and exposure to the Grey Pilgrim. Gandalf is legit the worst like that.
"Lucille is elsewhere as we are not wed, nor shall we ever be."
Asdis
"Clearly you are mistaken," Asdis said, crossing her arms. "I don't know for what reason though, as you constantly argue, but I am proof enough."
Thorin
"...or you may be some trick of this forsaken island." Which he really hoped was the case. It better be the case.
Asdis
"I am not a trick," Asdis protested. "Why would I be? We should go and find mother and see what she says."
Thorin
Thorin sighed, abandoning the task of deglittering his clothing. "She will tell you much the same."
Or they'd just argue over it.
Asdis
Of course they would, but her mother might be more understanding, Asdis thought, not yet aware that she was completely wrong. "Do you know where to find her?"
Thorin
"Follow me," he said with an annoyed huff. Finding Lucille's room would prove to be the least insane part of the weekend. That was how low the standards were proving to be.
Asdis
Asdis followed. At least her father was being somewhat more reasonable. "What a dull place," she said. "Nothing compared to our halls."
Thorin
Oh sure, give him all kinds of homesickness by mentioning Erebor. "The talents of men are unequal to that of our people," he said, trying to be diplomatic. Even though Asdis was completely correct.
He stopped to knock loudly on the door to Lucille's room as soon as he found it.
Lucille
Lucille had left her daughter with Cassandra, and was still trying to come to terms with the events of this morning. She was nervously pacing around her room, and if anyone asked she'd say that she was looking for her shawl. When she heard the knock, she almost jumped.
"Come in!" she called, expecting it to be Cassandra and Cathy.
Thorin
Thorin rolled his eyes because he hated everything today. But he opened the door for Asdis to make her way in to traumatize at least one more parent. "Something is terribly wrong this weekend."
Asdis
"Hello, mother," Asdis said, striding into the room. "Father is being quite annoying." She crossed her arms.
Lucille
Lucille's eyes widened as she took in the girl in front of her. Putting together being called mother, the sideburns and Thorin's presence, she quickly grasped the situation.
"This can't be true."
Thorin
"That is what I said as well." So they couldn't argue about that one point.
Asdis
"You're agreeing? How can you be agreeing?" Asdis looked perplexed.
Lucille
"It is rather strange." Lucille glanced at Thorin. "Although I did have another child interrupt me earlier."
At least adopting a child with Cassandra made some kind of sense. Sharing such a responsibility with a close friend wasn't unheard of in this time, she assumed.
Thorin
"So it may be merely a strange trick by the island," Thorin said, perking right up. Yes, as they ignored their child.
Their magic child.
Asdis
"No no no!" Asdis refused to be ignored. "I am here, and it is your duty as my parents to... act like parents."
Lucille
Lucille looked at Thorin. "Do you have other ones?"
If he hadn't he would have to care for her.
Thorin
"No," Thorin replied, looking deeply offended. "I did not expect this one either."
He glanced over at Asdis warily.
Asdis
Asdis glared at them. That they would agree on something and ignore her was unheard of. "You promised to show me how to make tiaras," she snapped at Thorin. She wasn't very interested in this, but that always got his attention.
Lucille
"See?" Lucille smiled at Thorin. "I'm of no use there."
Thorin
"I do not know how to care for a child!" Though it was quickly followed by, "Why would I not have shown you that already?"
Asdis
"Because I've been practicing on daggers for a really long time." Asdis actually wasn't that talented at this, for a Dwarf. Half-Dwarf.
Lucille
"Neither do I," Lucille replied. "But clearly you have made a promise to her. You don't want to break that promise, do you?"
Thorin
And now Thorin was torn between showing this strange so-called daughter of his own to create and yelling at Lucille for being absolutely no help in this.
"This conversation is not over," he informed Lucille darkly.
Asdis
Asdis looked pleased. "Where is your forge?" she asked. "Is there a good mine?"
Lucille
No, Lucille expected it wasn't, but for now Thorin would be busy teaching this girl -- her daughter -- to make tiaras. At least that was something.
