It's the ugly truth that's been said over and over: "Writer's write."  If I'm not spending quality time with butt-in-chair actually collecting strings of reasonably coherent words, then how can I call myself a writer?  I've finally decided that the problem keeping me from my goals is really very simple, I need to develop the habit of writing.  If I ( Read more... )

Too weird. Ever since I got laid off from USC, I haven't worked a single hour on my latest(about the girl who lost her leg in Iraq). Feel like I don't have the emotional energy. Then I keep thinking of that annoying writer who kept on writing even while going through chemo. He can kiss my @$$. It's hard to write when life is bearing down on you.
Here's the thing, though: I think that writing is like physical exercise. You can enjoy it, or it can become drudge work. If you try this new plan of yours, maybe it will push you over the hump from drudgery to something you look forward to.

Thanks Tom,
I agree that it's difficult to write if you don't have the emotional energy. It's possible that our "annoying writer" was actually increasing his emotional energy by writing; doing something he loved in defiance of his deadly disease. But for me so far, my new schedule seems to be pushing me over the hump. The good thing is that I find it much easier to get up and write, than I ever have trying to get up and exercise. Overall I guess it means that I love writing more than I love exercising. If the opposite were true, I'd have to hang up the keyboard for good.
