Troy

Many of you have already seen this movie and have had your own opinions. I Netflixed this movie and was very pleased with it. I thought this was a great movie and am actually going to go out and buy a couple copies. This will be the first DVD I've ever bought. There hasn't been a lot of movies out there that I have actually wanted to buy but I ( Read more... )

I thought it was pretty good too. Mostly because I didn't really know what happened in the Iliad. I sorta feel like I don't have to read the Iliad now (somebody correct me if I'm mistaken please).

Also, it was a huge help in my understanding of Ilium (Dan Simmons' book).

Oh, and the movie itself was entertaining. Based of what I learned in Ilium and from hearing about the real Iliad, I think they perhaps should have done a few things differently, but I'm sure the same could be said of almost any movie.

Shit. Now my imagination/memory is going haywire. I'm having a hard time distinguishing Troy from the events described in Ilium. I don't really know what happened in either one in certain cases.

As I was reading Ilium I just pictured the characters in Troy to take their places as actors in Ilium (like Paris looked like Orlando Bloom, and Agamemnon looked like Brian Cox).

I'm told that the Iliad actually had Gods present in the scenes. It would have been a mistake if they put that into the movie which I aplaud them for. There some other things such as the guy being killed wasn't Achilles cousin and some other small differences. I don't really care if the move was the exact same as the writings, I just wanted to be entertained and I was.

I have no problem with the exercise of creative license, I just thought the movie was sucky, mostly. Helen and Legolas both sucked, the sets were run-of-the-mill and the photography struck me as unimaginative and decidedly un-epic. I liked Eric Bana a lot, and the Trojan horse was pretty neato. Really, though, I just expect movies adapted from universally heralded works of literature should be better than mediocre.
