well duh, i'd not ask if it wasn't on a karaoke night....the only nights at koc that exist, are karaoke nights.

I'm actually amazed I'm not in a serious minority here (so far).

I'm also amazed that you view those as your only two options.

What if you invite a bunch of friends to go see a movie with you? ...or go to dinner somewhere? ...or have a picnic? ...or have a bonfire on the beach?

KoC is appealing because people you know and wouldn't mind seeing will be there... but your birthday is a reason for those very same people to come to you. Why do what you do every other night on the night that you have the most opportunity to do something else?

picnics don't work too well in january and i've not been koc'ing much of recent and didn't do anything last year at all.

If those are the options, definitely KoC. I agree with Chris, if there's something you want to do it's a good time to invite your friends to do it. If it's just about hanging with friends, KoC is a convenient locale. And you know you'll have a friendly bartender. ;-)
