1. There are varying philosophies and opinions as to which episodes are the best to introduce a new viewer to Doctor Who. As the first episode of the new series, "Rose" is a popular choice. Do you think it's a good first episode for a new viewer? What was YOUR first episode of Doctor Who?
I do actually think that it's a good introductory episode. I mean,I might warn a friend that it's a bit cheesy, but this episode does a good job of setting up the Doctor and Rose as characters. I think that later episodes might be good as stand-alones, but they're even better in the context of the characterizations.

My first episode of Doctor Who was "Dalek". I just stumbled across it one Saturday afternoon in college while my roommates were out of town and I was bored out of my mind and channel surfing. I was intrigued and tuned in the next week to see more.

2. How well does this episode function as an introduction to the concept of the show as well as to the characters of Rose and the Doctor?I think the episode does a decent job of setting up the ( ... )

Other Thoughts:On one hand, I think we’re supposed to believe that the Doctor is newlyish regenerated (as evidenced by him remarking on his ears). But then uh… the Doctor in this body has been roaming around history long enough to show up throughout history for Clive to collect pictures of him ( ... )

When Rose is talking to not!Mickey at the pizza place about her possible future, she says, “Is that it then? Dishing out chips?” And I think that's really interesting in light of "School Reunion" where we see Rose working at a school canteen, dishing out chips. She’s been forced to confront what her life would have been had she not met the Doctor. THAT’S why she so sensitive to the idea that the Doctor might abandon her one day and she’ll have to go back to that life.

Yeah, and it sort of makes me laugh the way the Doctor is so obliviously dick-ish to what she has to do in that role in SR. OH TEN. NEVER CHANGE.

Omg, Mickey. What is your damage? Your girlfriend almost died in an explosion and you want to go to the pub to watch a football match?

hahaha the odd thing is, that actually makes me fonder of Mickey. XD Rose in that scene is giving off such clear DON'T FUSS OVER ME I WANT TO BE ALONE vibes that I actually rate him leaving pretty highly!

Her little speech at the end is amazing.

But it doesn't have to have happened yet in the Doctor's chronology for the pictures to exist in Clive's.

She's not used to doing what she wants to do, to doing things for HER.

Yeah, I think that this is one of the central points to Rose's character arc. Rose initially refuses because she feels tied to her family. But as the show progresses, Rose starts making decisions for HER and living her life how SHE wants to live it. She loves her family, but she can't build her whole life around Mickey and Jackie.

Rose is the first one I watched, so from that PoV it makes it hard for me to objectively say if it's a good intro. For me it was perfect and I was in love about ten minutes in (the precise moment being "Nice to meet you, Rose, now run for your life!"). It also feels pretty quintessentially Doctor Who, or at least, quintessentially Rusty era - it's funny and cheesy and the CGI isn't great and the plot is kinda hilarious. But it's also something more: you can see Rose's mundane life and how much she's loving this adventure. You can see how broken the Doctor is. There's brief talk about the Time War. You've got "that's who I am, Rose Tyler". And then big, alien moments like the reveal of the TARDIS against little moments that make it real ("lots of planets have a north!"). It's all I love about this show ( ... )
