These two are not my favorite episodes. I really like Jack and his addition to the show, but other than that I find these two rather dull. Both the Doctor and Rose feel kind of out of character.
I do like the ending and the solution to the mystery of the episode. The "everyone lives" ending is nice for a change, and the nanobots as the answer is intriguing.
I love Jack, though I like him more in other episodes. I think Jack is a nice foil to Rose and the Doctor. I do think his progression from con man to good guy was a bit fast, but he did seem to be a con man with heart right from the beginning so it wasn't completely unbelievable. I was happy that he was around for the rest of season 1. The dynamic works better for me with the three of them rather than just the Doctor and Rose. It makes things more interesting, I think.
I'm fond of Jack, in that way that people are fond of really stupid puppies when they do really dumb things. Jack's supposed to be a 51st century ex-time-agent and yet he somehow pegs Rose for being one. He cracks under about ten seconds of pressure to admit he's a con man to the Doctor and Rose. HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE FALLEN FOR HIS THING? BECAUSE THEY MUST BE REALLY THICK. MAYBE IDIOCRACY WAS RIGHT AND THE HUMAN RACE IS DESTINED FOR STUPIDITY
