I'm surprised people consider the Bad Wolf ending to be a deus ex machina ending. Honestly, these three words get thrown around too much for my liking particularly regarding RTD. It actually irritates me. Did the Bad Wolf ending come out of nowhere? Absolutely not. Deus ex machina refers to an intervention that solves an unsolvable problem that seems to come out of left field. It goes against the internal logic of the story and is a plot device. Bad Wolf DID follow the rules that were created by RTD. For instance, Bad Wolf is a clue cleverly plotted throughout the whole season. Bad Wolf wasn't invented from air. Bad Wolf was following them everywhere. But why? That was the question. Then it was answered logically according to the world created (not real life of course

*Thank* you! You described my POV much more thoroughly than I feel capable of right now.
I think "Deus ex machina" has become a buzz-phrase that people use to mean "ending I don't like". Much like "Mary Sue" for some people means "female character I don't like".
You're welcome! I feel the exact same way as you. It is a total buzz phrase. The whole Mary Sue thing irritates me as well. Whenever someone doesn't like a female character, it's always she's so "Mary Sue." It's actually obnoxious to me. My favorite one is how IF a female character is flawed in a way that they feel they can 'judge' the character that automatically means the character is Mary Sue which makes me wonder if some people even know what it means in the first place. A total pet peeve of mine.
