They had been practicing for 4 days and for 5 days they’ve been seeing each other without anyone knowing.  They met for practice on day 6 prepared to put finishing touches on their dance.

Mark looked up as Sabrina came dragging in.  Last night was the first night he had gone home after their trist.  She didn’t look good and he was worried.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”

“It’s stupid.  Don’t worry about it, I’m fine.”

“I want to know.”

“I couldn’t sleep.  I…uh…well I missed you there by my side.”

“I could have stayed you know.  You are the one who said you needed some time to yourself.”

“I know and I was wrong.  Can you stay tonight?  Please?”

“Let’s see how well you listen today first.  I would hate to have you putting up a fight all day long.”  He grinned and she couldn’t help but giggle and smile back.  “So…let’s polish today and see where we end up.”

“You’re the boss.”  She winked at him to show him that she could let him be in charge another day.

They practiced the dance several times, adding a new element here and there to add their flair to it.  They then started working on exact hand placement and footing, just to give it a polished and professional look.  They finally saw perfection and decided to go to lunch.

“Let me take you to lunch beautiful!”

“Well…since you said it nicely, I guess I can’t resist.”  She batted her eyes at him making him laugh.

“Great.  Where would you like to go?”

“Wherever you take me.  You’re in control…remember?”

They changed shoes and Sabrina straightened her hair up that had fallen out of her ponytail during rehearsal.  They started to walk out hand in hand, but thought better of it right before they got to the door.  They could get along in front of people today, but they couldn’t seem overly friendly according to her rules.  Sabrina didn’t notice a bag outside the door and tripped.  She landed hard and let out a scream.  She sat dazed for a moment and then let out a loud moan and then whimpered.

“Sabrina!  Are you okay?”  His look of concern was sincere.

“My ankle.  I think I twisted it.”

“Let’s get you up and see how it feels.”  He helped her up and let her bear some weight on it.  She quickly shifted her weight to the other foot and let out another whimper.  “That bad, huh?”

“I can’t walk Mark.  What are we going to do?  We dance in a few weeks and I haven’t even started rehearsals with Jonathon.”

“I’m taking you home and putting ice on it.  We’ll see how it’s doing and if it’s not better, we can go to the hospital for xrays.”

“I can’t make it down the st….”

“I’ll carry you,” he interrupted.  He swept her up into his arms quickly and carried her down the steps.  She rested her head on his shoulder.  He put her down gently with her standing on her good leg while he opened the car door, then helped her in.  He drove her to her house, again carrying her to her door and inside.  He took her straight upstairs to her bedroom and placed her on the bed.  “How’s it feeling?”

“It’s throbbing.  I have some pain pills in the medicine cabinet that I had when I hurt my foot on tour.  Could you get them for me?”

“Sure.  I’ll get you some water too.  You should probably eat since you’re taking medicine on an empty stomach.”  He was doting on her and he hadn’t done that since they dated.  She could tell he was concerned and he was working effortlessly to make her as comfortable as possible.

“Mark?  Thank you.  You have always taken care of me.”  She smiled and he felt a pang of guilt.  He hadn’t always been there for her to take care of her and they both knew it.  He would never understand how she could forgive him for his stupidity, yet she did.  Sure they couldn’t get back what they had because they didn’t seem to work long term.  They had these times where they would dance together or see each other and arrange times to meet.  They seemed volatile to everyone around them, but no one knew what they did behind closed doors.

“Bri, you know I’ll stay and take care of you, right?  I meant what I said last night.  I love you.  I’ve never stopped loving you.  You know I want more, but I love you so much that I accept this game you play just to be able to see you and spend time with you.”  He walked downstairs to get her water and fix her something to eat.  She was left with his words ringing in her ears.  He loved her like she thought and she wanted to give him what he wanted…but she was scared.  Putting her heart back on the line was scary and not something she wanted to risk.  She had the same thought running through her head.  Could they make it work this time?  Could she risk her heart and be open to love again?  She didn’t know if she was ready to jump in or not.

He came back with a sandwich, fruit and a bottle of water. “I thought this might help.  Here’s some ice for your ankle too.”

“Thanks.  I appreciate this Mark.”  Her words were simple because she was scared she’d blurt out how she was feeling and how she was scared.  She ate quietly as he doted on her and arranged the ice pack on her ankle.

“How’s that?  Okay?”

“It’s fine Mark.  Thanks again.”

“You’ve thanked me at least a dozen times Bri.  You’re welcomed.  I know you’re thankful, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

She blushed and smiled at him in her sweet way.  Could she leave herself open to love again?  Could she suppress her feelings for him much longer?  She didn’t have the answers but she wanted them now.  She knew it wouldn’t happen that way and that it would take some time to sort it all out.  She didn’t want to make a hasty decision when it was so important.

Mark watched her eat and then gave her the pain pills.  After 20 minutes he could see the medicine starting to take affect and watched as she slipped into a sound sleep.  He went back downstairs with her dishes and then fixed him a sandwich.  After eating he went back to her bedroom and climbed in bed beside her…just being close to her made him feel better.
