Sabrina woke up moaning in pain.  Her ankle was hurting and she sighed when she recalled what had happened earlier.  She opened her eyes and looked over to see Mark sound asleep beside her.  She smiled.  He said he would stay and take care of her and he did.

She could tell by this pain that she would need an x-ray and a doctor to look at her ankle.  She picked up the phone and quietly called Starr.  After the conversation she tried to stand up and squelched a yelp.  Sitting back down, she collected her thoughts.  She pulled out a piece of paper and a pen and wrote Mark a note explaining where she was, then she hobbled out of bed and the bedroom.  She made it to the top of the steps, then sitting on her backside, went down the stairs.  She waited on the bottom step until she heard Starr pull up.  She hopped to the door and quietly left her house and him in her bed.

Mark woke up with a start.  He jumped when he noticed that she wasn’t in her bed.  He was about to run to the bathroom until he saw the note.

Markiss~

My ankle needed some medical attention so Starr has taken me to the doctor.  I knew you would take me, but we have to be careful.  I will be home as soon as possible.  If you aren’t here, I’ll understand, but I hope you are.  I do…you know. ~Bri

Mark smiled.  He was hurt she didn’t let him take her, but she did love him.  Sure, she didn’t want photos of them out and that hurt…but she loved him.  He let that thought truly sink in.  He looked at the clock and realized she should be home anytime.  He got up and straightened her bed.  He decided to ruin her plan and if Starr saw her inside, she’d have to see him too.  She kept her relationship secret from Starr and her parents most of all. Starr hated him for breaking her baby sister’s heart.  Even when Sabrina had tried to get her to forgive him, she hadn’t.  Mark made a pitcher of lemonade and a sandwich then, sat in the living room and waited.

Sabrina limped into the house with an air cast on her ankle.  Starr walked in behind her.  Mark sat smiling and waiting to be noticed.  Already, Sabrina was trying to get Starr out quickly, but then when she saw Mark she froze.  Starr caught sight of him and she stopped in her tracks.

“What the heck are you doing here?”  She looked confused and like she thought he’d broken into her sister’s house.

“Sabrina, would you like to tell your sister what I’m doing here?”  He winked at her even as she shot him a hateful glare.

“Mark is the reason my ankle is twisted.  I was practicing with him.”  She gave him a wicked smile.

“Oh, you don’t tell the truth Doll.”  He looked at Starr, “she tripped on the way out of the studio.  I wasn’t touching her.”

“Sabrina?  What’s going on?”  Starr was looking at her sister and then back to Mark.

“Look, I had to practice with him for Ballroom With A Twist.  I didn’t exactly have a choice,” she lied.  “I’m not exactly sure why he’s here except maybe guilt.  I’m going to bed so you two do what you want.”  She tried to stomp out with dignity, but it was hard to look fed up or dignified hobbling out with a walking air cast on.

“Are you leaving now?”  Starr stared him down.

“I hadn’t planned on it.  You?”

“I need to get back to work, but I can’t leave you here.  You need to leave!”

“Maaarrrkkk?  I need to see you for a minute…before you leave.”  Sabrina’s cry from upstairs made Mark smile.

“I can’t leave until I’m dismissed from the Ice Queen.”  He turned and walked the stairs.  Halfway up he hears the phone ring and then Sabrina tell the caller that she was fine with him being there and she was a big girl.  She assured, who now he assumed was Starr, that he was leaving after they talked.  She snapped the phone shut as Mark walked into the room.  “Aren’t you cute!”

“I am!”

“Yeah…I wasn’t talking literally little girl.  Tell me what the doctor said.”

“The doctor told me to stop working with a complete fool!”  She turned away from him to hide her smile.

“You’re doctor is an idiot.  Did he notice you have a hurt ankle, or did you doctor yourself?”

She was sitting on the side of the bed and stood up to pull down the covers.  “He said that it’s twisted, but not broken.  He gave me some really good pain medicine.” She winked at him.

“You and your pain medicine.  I don’t think you need any.  I think all you need is me….but you know what princess?”

She looked scared briefly, “what?”

“You’re gonna have to rest ALONE.  I’ve got practice with Kristi today.”  He smiled wickedly at her. “If I think about it I’ll check in on you.”

“WHAT?  You can’t leave me here!”

“It’s your house so why not?”

“Mark!  I probably shouldn’t be alone if I’m taking pain medicine.”

“You’re right.  Come on.”  He lifts her off the bed and carries her downstairs and plops her onto the couch.  “Don’t try the stairs while you’re alone.  You might fall and we don’t want that.  I guess I could bring you some water so you don’t get dehydrated.”  He walks into the kitchen and comes back with a glass of water.  He gives her a peck on the cheek.  “Call me if you need anything…but you might want to call someone who did NOT cause you to twist your ankle!”  He smiled and walked out the front door.  She pouted and threw herself back against the couch.  He wasn’t supposed to walk out on her.  He was supposed to be taking care of her.  She took her pain medicine and then sat stewing.  She soon fell asleep on the lonely couch…without him there to hold her.

Mark’s phone rang and he was quick to reach for it, expecting it to be her.  He was disappointed that it was Jonathon.  He had left him a message about Sabrina’s ankle and practices that would have to be moved back.  Jonathon was very understanding.  Mark ended his call with him and looked at his phone, willing her to call him.  He wanted so badly to give in and call her, but he decided not to.  He couldn’t be weak when it came to her.  He wanted her to want him enough to call him and beg him to come back over, even if that meant she might never call him.

Sabrina woke up and saw she was alone still.  She huffed.  She picked her phone up and dialed his number.  Before it could ring, she hung up.  Why was she giving in?  It hit her hard…she loved him.  She wanted to be near him and she needed him to be here with her.  She dialed the number again.  He answered on the second ring.

“Mark?  It’s Bri.”

“I got that.  How are you feeling?  How’s the ankle?”

“It’s okay, but I’m not.  Can you come back…please?”

“Are you okay?  You sound sad.”

Sabrina sighed, “I am lonely and I…I…miss you.”

“I’ll be there in an hour.  Do you want me to bring you anything to eat?”

“Um…Taco Bell?”

“The usual?”

“Yep, sounds good…and Mark?”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you.  You don’t have to come over, but I’m very glad you are.” A sob escapes her.  “I’m not supposed to need you this much.”

“Shh…oh Baby, don’t cry.  I love you and I love that you need me.  I know you don’t like that, but it’s not a bad thing.  We need to stop playing games and commit to a relationship.”  When she was quiet, he added, “I’ll leave now okay?”

“Yeah…okay.”

Mark didn’t fully understand why it upset her to need anyone, but that’s just part of who she was.  He prayed that he would be able to help ease her fears and maybe move into an actual relationship.  Only time will tell.
