He took her soft hand in his the very first day they had met, within the hour even. He noticed it’s small, petite size and the softness and delicateness of her fingers. He also noticed her hand was trembling. He wondered why? She was the star and he was just a dancer, not heard of in her world. She had traveled the world and everyone knew who she was…he was known in the realm of ballroom, but not reality. Not yet anyway. “Can I ask you why your hand is trembling?” She looked up, half smiling and half scared. “I’m nervous. I want this journey to be a wonderful experience and when I walked in I got nervous. I never get this way.” She smiled ever so slightly and when he squeezed her hand softly, she relaxed some and the trembling stopped.
They had been dancing together for weeks now and there was a familiar comfort about being partners. They started working on a difficult dance for her, the Rumba. She wasn’t comfortable displaying that side of her for all to see. For her, it was a private and intimate time for people. Acting it wasn’t hard, but it was difficult to decipher where the acting ended and her true feelings began. It scared her. He had talked to her about the dance, but now it was time to work on it. He took her very familiar and delicate hands in his and found them trembling. He looked at her, smiling. “You’re nervous. I understand, but you can do this. I’ll be right here helping you.” She looked down, which wasn’t like her. He lifted her chin asking with his eyes for her to explain. “This dance is too close. Too close to my feelings right now. That’s why my hands are trembling.” He looked at her with an overwhelming desire to kiss her. He brought her hand up to his mouth and sweetly kissed it. He brought the same hand to his chest and wrapped his other hand around her waist. He pulled her in close and kissed her. When the kiss ended, her hand was steady again. He smiled with a deep satisfaction.
He was holding her hands and waiting for her answer. Her hands were trembling. He suddenly felt very frightened. “I have to go…you know I do. I have to make this movie. I’ll be back in less than 3 months Baby. Please wait for me. I know it’s not ideal, but we can make it through this.” He knew she had to leave and it hadn’t been fair to ask her to stay. This was her job. The job she adored and was so incredible at. “I’ll wait for you. No matter how long, I’ll wait.” Just like that, her hands stopped trembling.
He wasn’t touching her hands, but he could see them trembling. He just delivered the shocking news in a fatal blow. He was over her and wanted to move on. Her hands were shaking so much that she started wringing them together in a feeble attempt to calm herself. He reached for her hands but she jerked away. He wanted to calm her, but he couldn’t calm and comfort her with himself and then tell her what he thought he wanted. She didn’t give him more time to think…she walked away with her hands still trembling.
He ran into her at the very familiar lot as they were now both working there. He was no longer with the woman he left her for, but her icy eyes told him to stay away. She stayed long enough to do her job and didn’t give him any opportunities to come near her. He ran into her one day in the hallway, knocking them both to the floor. “Dang it! Watch where you are going buddy!” She looked up to see who she was yelling at and saw him. He quickly got up and reached to help her to her feet. Her hands were trembling. She was nervous and he could tell. He held her hand a little longer than he should have and she let him. He asked her to dinner and she finally agreed. That’s when he realized, her hands were calm again.
He stood and saw the light in her eyes. He slipped the ring on her trembling hand. He brought her close to him and scooped her up. They shared a warm embrace and a kiss towards forever. When he put her down and took her hand again, it was soft and small, but not trembling.
He noticed her hands. They were trembling. He hadn’t seen her like this in a while. She was strong and confident, yet now, in this moment, her hands were trembling. He reached for her hand and took it into his, hoping his slight presence would lend her comfort. He was surprised that her tiny hand in his continued to tremble. He dared a glance towards her face. It wasn’t a face he had seen before. He knew it was her, but that expression wasn’t hers. It was borrowed, it had to be. Why was she so nervous? He moved a step closer and willed her to look in his eyes. “Why are your hands trembling?” He hoped she had heard him, they were close enough but he was desperately trying to keep this comment for her ears only. He watched her as she smiled softly. “I’ve never been this happy before.” His heart melted at her admittance. Just then the minister walked up to start the ceremony and her hands no longer trembled.
He just watched her go through the most painful thing imaginable and she still looked graceful and beautiful. When the nurse placed the small baby in his arms to carry over to her, his face lit up as well as his heart. This was a little mixture of their love. They had each poured some traits into this little baby and now there was a person they created. As he handed the small wrapped baby to her, he noticed her hands were trembling. He placed the baby in her arms, patted her reassuringly and told her he loved her. After a kiss on the forehead, she looked into the eyes of their child and suddenly, her hands stopped trembling.
He watched as she crumpled to the ground. She had wanted this second child so badly. He could do nothing to protect her from this pain. He sat with her in the hospital hallway and held her trembling body as she wept. She was too distraught to notice the people walking by and staring at their sad sight. When her crying had softened, he helped her up and he reached for her trembling hands. He held her up as she stumbled down the hallway, still sobbing. He held her hand on the way home praying for the trembling to stop. He lay with her in bed and the trembling was now wracking her body with violent shakes as she poured her heart out in the form of tears and whimpers. She had already loved this child and he had too. She had names picked out, the nursery decorated and big sister prepared. She was ready and it was ripped away from her. He noticed her hands still trembling for days afterwards. He couldn’t pin point when, but one day, her hands were quiet again with no signs of trembling.
He held her hand as he was rolled into surgery. Her hands were trembling. “I’ll be fine. Please don’t get so upset, don’t worry.” Her hand still in his and still trembling, she said, “I love you. Please…don’t leave me. Get through this surgery and we’ll get you home and better.” He looked at her with a sad and heavy heart. “I’m going to be fine. The doctor even told us the procedure was outpatient. You worry too much. I love you and I’ll see you in a few hours. I’m going to be fine and so will you.” She smiled and kissed him. Her hand stopped trembling before he let her go.
He saw her laying in the hospital bed, small and delicate. He didn’t realize how much she had aged until he looked at her now. He had always seen her as young and vibrant, but she really was older now…so was he. He walked to the bedside and sat down, taking her small hand in his. “Your hand is trembling my love. Are you okay?” She opened her eyes and he leaned down to kiss her. “Stay with me. Walk me home please.” He thought at first she was talking rubbish, but realized her true meaning. “Walk me home to Jesus.” He held her hand and lay down beside her. He talked to her and spilled his heart to her about how much he loved her and how much she meant to him. Her hand was trembling and tears were streaming down her cheeks. “I have always loved you. Even in our hard times. Thank you. Thank you for walking me home.” He kissed her for the last time and he noticed that her hand was no longer trembling.
