I'm not an overly religious person. Spiritual, yes, religious, not so much. However, one of my few strict observances is what I do for Lent. Don't ask me why, but it is one thing I do take seriously even if I find most of the premises of organized religion to be overwrought with the need to dominate via fear and sexism. I think that a lot of people lose sight of what Lent is supposed to be about. By denying oneself something that means a lot to him (or her, in this case), the intent is to get one to focus on the Divine and become closer to it--it's a concept that's common to many faiths. For example, I tend to sacrifice things for a while if I feel that it's getting in the way of my spiritual growth and improvement as a person, and I treat the sacrifice as an opportunity to devote the attention and energy that I would have devoted to the sacrificed thing toward something that's more constructive for me personally (and, in turn, those around me).
