First Creme Egg advert sighting.
Just after an ad for some car advertising "Less Emissions, not less style." We will not be buying that when we come to buy a new car. (if I can find out what it is, I was so incensed at the strapline I failed to pay attention to the brand.)

There are fewer fewers and more lesses year on year. Fewer is doomed and our language will be the lesser for it. I worry that as fewer users we must evolve or become one day subject to reverse pedantry from the victorious less-sayers.

I always was a one for fighting a rearguard action. E'en though I have done linguistics and know descriptive>proscriptive, chasing the sun and all that. Even though I know that the split infinitive doesn't exist, it makes me want to chew the table. There is no hope for me.

Nor me.
Anyone may, of course, say what they please, but the fact remains that saying some things sounds horrible.

Yes, and sometimes it's splitting the infinitive :p

There was a newspaper article I read a few months ago that particularly sticks in the mind: somebody had slavishly adhered to the idea that Split Infinitives Are Wrong, and as such had made several sentences hideously inelegant and woefully ambiguous, where if they'd simply known anything about grammar said sentences would have actually made sense.

I fully agree that "split infinitives" are, in English, in most cases, inelegant (NB not the same thing as "wrong") - however, sometimes they are The Only Way Forward.

That advert makes me grind my teeth in the same way that the'Ysgol Cerddoriaeth' observation does.

I have Dafydd Glyn Jones' address. I am seriously considering an anonymous note about that. Someone also needs to fix "Yr Hen Llew" in town...

But once one starts... ;)

One of my colleagues is a Welsh learner. Nothing wrong with that; I myself am from a non-Welsh speaking family. However, I have a sneaking suspicion that he's wilfully refusing to mutate his nouns. It's nothing short of painful.

Haven't seen the ad, but I definitely winced to see the manager of our local Somerfield, on Monday 29th December, that is just 4 days after Xmas, carefully taking away the display of Xmas selection boxes and replacing them with - Cadburys Mini Eggs. argggH!
