I'm rather embarrassed to have read less than half, but frankly there are several on here not really worth reading IMO

Somebody reckons most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here... but since several of them are series, and therefore include duplicates...

Actually if you saw the play in it's entirety and paid attention then yes it should count for having read it... it was how the author intended you to experience it.

I have read 6 books off this list. That makes me seem like I am not well read, just not on classics.

I suggest giving War and Peace a pass (really not worth it) and trading that * out for Wuthering Heights, which is great IMHO. If you like gothic novels anyway. Of course Wuthering Heights would fit about a billion times into War and Peace.

I really love Anton Checkov's short stories as well as his plays so I thought I ought to try more Russian work.

I enjoyed reading Crime and Punishment, but it was very kafka-esque to me. Maybe if I reread it now, understanding more about how people react and stuff...

I like everything I've ever read by Tolstoy except for War and Peace. He's got some great short stories. Anna Karenina: awesome. War and Peace: BOOOOOOOORING. Maybe if you're super super into Russian history it might be more interesting. I am under the impression that there's a huge amount of social commentary about Russian culture at the time. And while a little bit of that bleeds through into universal ideas, most of it does not. Or so it came across to me. YMMV
