Serial Experiments Lain

Almost a decade after the fact, I just finished watching the entire series of Serial Experiments Lain. In all, honestly, it felt like the kind of stuff that art school students that really don't have have any creativity come up with by trying really hard. That's disappointing to hear. I probably would have loved it back in the 90s, when the internet was still fresh and exciting and we all loved the Matrix, but back then, I was deep and no one understood me. Oh well, it still has pretty art. I'll watch just about anything with Yoshitoshi Abe character designs.

Planetes looks pretty interesting. I'm a little worried about that no aliens, psychic powers, or magic part, though. How will I know I'm watching anime? Is there at least a cute animal mascot, or a character with ridiculously spiky hair?

Well, the company that the space debris collectors work for does have a goofy pick Sasquatch as its mascot, so that might count as "cute animal mascot." And, while the Japanese male character does not have "spiky hair" exactly, he is definitely standard irresponsible/misunderstood tuff kid anime-fare. And the girl can be kind of annoying in a spunky idealistic Japanese female protagonist kind of way.

Lain definitely appears to the angst-ridden teenager demographic, that's for sure. Although I still love the Matrix...I really dislike the sequels and think that they sabotaged the philosophical underpinnings of the first one. Oh well, that's what being a writer is all about: writing the stories that other people wrote, only better.
