I don't know if it will backfire. Most people like the idea of being rich, but when then see someone unaware of how many houses they own, it means they aren't like them. We have an odd relationship with the rich. We want to be like them, but we hate them for being so wasteful and self-indulgent. McCain seems wasteful and self-indulgent. He also seems out of touch. When people are in dire straights, they want someone they believe gets where they are coming from. They have seen the effects of "the market" and they are tired of it.
