Other Girl Scout leaders annoy me a lot, often, in so many ways, but I don't know if I've ever been so irritated as I am by Girl Scout leaders who think they have every (theoretical, thank god) right to say they won't accept a girl with HIV into their troops, because they "don't feel qualified" since they don't have "medical training" like I do.  ( Read more... )

And though some of the issues have changed... the fact that there ARE these issues hasn't changed at all. I'm certain there were leaders who had to deal with pregnant teenagers going all the way back. And diseases, and disabilities, and alcoholic parents...

It's not really important because the argument is bogus, but no school I ever went to had a nurse who was actually at the school. I think my whole district had one nurse who floated around. Just sayin'...

Oh, I know, and I mentioned that, but I don't think some people believed me. There are a few states where full-time school nurses are required (so I hear), but not most.

Are diabetic girls allowed in? What about those with asthma? Epilepsy?

Oh, of course. And the national Girl Scout organization is absolutely welcoming and non-discriminatory to girls or adults with HIV... it's just these particular dumb leaders.
