[It was easier said than done to ignore the illusions. Balthier was doing remarkably well, considering, but when his whole surroundings changed it became a chore to figure out where he was going. Twice already he'd tripped over potholes and walked into a disintegrating lamppost. Captain Balthier was not fucking impressed. Still, acts of clumsiness on his part made the illusions pass long enough that he spotted Ashe running down an alley, talking to thin air.

Oh dear.

He took off after her. It was always easier to stick his nose in other's problems than deal with his own, after all.

...And suddenly he found himself in a crowded Dalmascan street, chasing after the Queen.]

Ashe!

[She heard her name being called, but by a thousand of her people, not one Archadian. She hadn't remembered the carriage moving this fast, and there were so many people - so many, though she could barely feel them as she pushed through, breathless.

She was certain of one thing - she had to keep pace with the carriage, to make it into the Cathedral before the doors closed, barring her from reliving this memory which she held so dear.

A sudden stumble, and she fell, grazing her hands on the rough pavement but picking herself up in an instant. She had to carry on.]

No -no wait!

[Damn... of course she wouldn't have heard him. Not with this ruckus, but he gets an opportunity to reach her when she stumbles.

Grasping her by the arm, he hauls her to her feet and gives her an exasperated look.]

Have to keep moving, or you'll miss the wedding, right?

[Eyes refocusing, she looks at Balthier as if doing so for the first time, before realising yes, this is someone she knows. It's Balthier... He should not be here. A frown, and she tries to pull away.]

Let me go, Balthier! My father, Uncle Halim-

[Glancing up to the doors where they stand, both are smiling at the young princess in the white dress. It's her, sure enough, but you wouldn't think it to look upon the expression of happiness and inner peace upon her face. The serene smile. Life was so much easier, then.]
