one thing that has always interested me is the concept of a utopia. in most cases, utopias are pipe dreams, ideologies that cannot take shape in the fabric of a real-life social structure. but i believe that for a brief period, a small, modest utopian society did exist. it was developed during the infancy of the internet ( Read more... )

You spend a lot of time looking for communities of like-minded people. It's a lot of work, frankly, and you wind up grabbing up people here and there and forming your own.

That's what something like Friendster is ostensibly for, and the current wave of Internet growth is angling towards each person customizing their online experience to make it as comfortable and suitable for themselves as possible, and that includes tailoring communities to meet their needs. There's a lot of bugs to work through, though.

it can be a tough call. it's like comparing the city to the countryside. while the countryside is safer, the city has more resources. in the country, you must know the terain in order to get around. in the city, you can hop on mass transit and get anywhere you need to. you can even ask strangers for directions at help desks. the current state of the internet is a great deal more comfortable to me know than it ever could have been then. but i am neurologically typical.
