Actually, I had a slightly odd result from Mail a few weeks ago, when enquiring of LJ folks I ought to encounter - relee replied with some names, listed one per line. I've recently begun using Mail in its three-column full-screen mode, rather than - as I've done since the early days of OS X, after I reluctantly left Eudora - having a significantly sized window permanently on display. In this configuration, the mailboxes are on the left, then a list of message synopses (sender, subject, and start of the message), then the message body.
It turns out that in order to maximise the usage of the space available in the synopsis, Mail strips linebreaks, giving rise to a LJ gestalt entity:
