This sounds surprisingly similar to what I do when writing articles about things I know only a little about[0]. Except that I can't exactly divide up the 'synthesis' & 'write proper report' phases due to the fact that editors are likely to be unimpressed if you submit summary-with-handwavey a week before deadline; even if you then submit proper actual piece as commissioned *by* the deadline, in real English and everything ( ... )
