There's a rhthym to chopping wood; rise and fall, pause to place a new piece of wood, rise and fall, pause. It's mind-numbing to do, and likely so to watch as well.

Rise and fall, pause. Resettle the hat. Roll up the sleeves.

Rise and fall.

It's soothing, almost like--

well, Ennis don't know what it's almost like, but it's nice to listen to anyways, and he leans his head back, closin' his eyes against the bright sun.

Thunk.

It's mind-numbing, and Jack likes that, today. Good to be doing something that takes enough concentration so you don't chop off a foot instead of half alog, even though he's not wholly sure just how Sallie's going to be using it. Doesn't seem as though wood's all that neccesary, here on Shadow.

Still, it's familiar, and he's always been good at it, and he pauses, bends to put another log on the block. Rise and fall.

Thunk.

He glances back over his shoulder at Ennis, bundled up like he is, and smiles a little.

Wood for fences, wood for the house. But Sallie's got fences, and Sallie's got a house. But Ennis ain't thinking too hard on it anyway, and he opens his eyes to see Jack lookin' back at him, and he smiles.
