I love garlic soooooo much. I always feel guilty when I eat it, because I know that many people can't stand the smell, but I just can't help myself; if I see a dish on the menu containing garlic, let no one get between it and myself lest they bring on their own hasty demise. Not only does it taste good (and in my opinion, smell good), but it also makes me feel warm, friendly, and energetic (but not jittery ala caffeine). Come to think of it, that is probably the last effect that those around me would want the consumption of large quantities of garlic to have on me; I suppose they would prefer it making me more inclined to sequester myself in a closet until the smell goes away. Alas, you can't please all people all the time... :p
I totally agree with your opinion of garlic, and encourage you to consume a "Larry's Cure" at Roger's Zoo in North Bend, OR at some point in your life. The feeling immediately after is incredible. The night is a bit rough. But by the next afternoon, you will never have felt better.
I'm glad to hear you are doing so well! I miss the West Coast, from the few times I've been there. I have found replacements for the food, but not the people or the scenery. Well, I haven't really found replacements for the restaurants either, because the people and the scenes are part of the experience, so really I just miss it all.
I hope you got my phone message the other day. I miss hearing from you more than I miss the West Coast.
It sounds like the music scene in Oregon is quite busy. Maybe I'll look into those programs for next summer. Are they Oregon-exclusive as far as staffing? What are you up to during August? I'm working at McCaw Hall but I'm hoping to make a train trip down to PDX to visit. This time, for real. When is the best time to visit?
Jon Nakamatsu is amazing! He and Mr. Manasse work collaboratively on a regular basis and record together. Recently they recorded the Brahms Clarinet Sonatas which sound milky and delicious. Jon Nakamatsu is a "Rochester Favorite." He plays with RPO often and is just amazing. Have you read about his background? You'd be surprised.
There are a TON of music festivals in the summer in Oregon. They hire from all over, but it's very 'invitation-only' and some people have been holding on to the positions for years. At any rate, if you're interested, I'll toss your name around. Can you get a bass or Eb? If you can get a bass and contrabass, you can try to get recording work in Seattle. At any rate, Nakamatsu was awesome, and I'd love to hear him and Manasse do Brahms. I haven't read about his background...
Anyway, the last week or so of August calms down a little for me...I'll be up in Seattle now and then, but never for more than a day or two until winter probably. Hope you're doing well!

Nights and weekends are preferable (my phone plan is still horrible.)
