The jazz lesson that I had on Monday was really invigorating. I think that when I last studied jazz "seriously," I hadn't really developed much of an ear or much theory. So-called "jazz theory" is not exactly the same as traditional western classical conservatory theory, but is essentially the same knowledge with a different dialect. And all the ( Read more... )

Okay, first off, I seriously admire you greatly. On many levels.

I love jazz, but I cannot claim to understand it. Jazz theory is totally beyond me. Granted, I was not exactly a genius at classical music theory, either, but I "get it" and I can understand scores, etc. But jazz? I am literally the sort-of ignorant listener who juts enjoys it. Yeah, I can recognize styles and musicians and composers, etc. but that's about it.

But most of all, I think that you're handling your mental health exceedingly well. You're very wise. In general, I'm not a fan of medication, but I do understand it's worth and necessity and you really seem to have an understanding of it. Good for you. You really ARE a realist, are you not?

Well, thanks, I'm flattered! Honestly, once you identify the analogous terminology from classical theory, jazz theory isn't so bad.

I try to be very realistic about my mental health. The likelihood, which I've worked for a decade now to uncover, is that I have a chemical imbalance in my brain. To me, not correcting this is like having impaired vision and trying to wander around without glasses. Sure you can still do it, but certainly not as well, and it isn't good for you. I'm aware of how I function without it, which is not well, but I promise that I won't forget that it is possible for me to function at all without it.

Re: Have you read any of Steve Coleman's stuff? e_m_k October 26 2008, 22:30:46 UTC
Very interesting! I'd have to read a lot more of it before I was really qualified to have a conversation about it, but thanks for the link. I've seen similar work here and there, but never this essay.
